I got standby as well. Aw well, I'm guessing that's a rejection.

Rejected as well. Sad. Oh well- off to send in my UChicago confirmation :)

Candidate! See the rest of you candidates soon! Anyone going Feb 23?

Ready for my Olin story? Of course you are.

I knew Olin had talked about everyone getting decisions on Friday. Lucky for me, I didn't have school Friday (by some ridiculous coincidence) so I got to stay home and wait anxiously for my decision. I knew they would be online in the afternoon, but who could wait that long? My dad said they would be mailing acceptances via Fedex, so I went to their site and found their delivery times. Unfortunately, there was more than one, and even if that was not the case, that still would not have been enough to calm me down. And then I hear a truck at the corner of the street. I turn around to look through my window, and I see a big brown UPS truck coming towards my house.

Now, I didn't even know if that truck was coming to my house. In fact, my neighbor across the street gets a bunch of UPS mail. I didn't even know that if it did come to our house if it wouldn't be a package for my dad, which he does occasionally receive. But I just got so excited that I started jumping up and down and ran around the house. The truck stopped near our house. I peeked across the living through the window and saw the UPS guy get off the truck and walk towards my house with a 8.5" by 11" envelope. I ran towards the door, still in pajamas and with unruly hair, and opened the door before he had a chance to ring the doorbell. I eagerly grabbed the envelope from him. I looked at it, saw my name, saw "Olin", and, well, ....... happy happy joy joy!

Mathwiz-I didn't expect complete rejection either. I expected that my stats would at least get me to Candidate Weekend, where if they didn't like me they'll reject me or something. Guess not. Looks like Olin's getting tougher and tougher. Congrats to all accepted and good luck in final process.

Groundhawk- I'm waiting on MIT too, so good luck to you also. If you ever read this haha.

mathwiz, great story.
Kamikazewave, I admire your resilience. Best of luck to you, too, at the college of your choice.

Anyone up for a Facebook group?

Definitely! Are you going to start it?

Ok I will. I'll ask for the 22nd word in the last paragraph to join.

"I'll ask for the 22nd word in the last paragraph to join."

???

I'm up for a facebook group, but don't really get the significance of that statement.

Created! Group name: Olin '11 Candidates

Message me with the 22nd word in the last paragraph of the acceptance letter to join!

haha kamikazewave, i did read this, and I wish u best of luck. My morale is kinda deflated now, with my first rejection. Packing my bags for a perhaps RPI class of '11.

Ok, I just requested to join the facebook group. :-)

I found out yesterday that another girl from my school got in, so I guess that's why I got rejected. I mean with only 75 spots I'm pretty sure Olin can't afford to accept more than one of us from each school. Oh well. She's cool and all so I'm happy for her.

Will they accept 75? I thought they have some waitlisted/deferred kids from last year, thus reducing the number of available spots for this year. It is clear that 170 candidates are invited. Out of them if 50 or so are accepted we are looking at nearly 5% acceptance rate based on the initial number of applicants! That is tougher than HYPs.

There are 73 slots in the class of 2011
http://admissionblog.olin.edu/

There are likely some deferred students from before, but, I'm not sure how many. I am also unsure of the target size of the class of 2011. 06, 07, 08, and 09 were targeted at 75ish but '10 was bigger. I know that Olin eventually (in the next 15 years or so) planning to get bigger than the current 300 students. At one point, the target number was 600. So it could be possible that there are only 2 deferred students and so there are 73 spots, or it could be that they will let the class be bigger than 75.

In either case, Olin tends to admit about 120 students when they want 75 to come. It's all a numbers game. In the same way airlines overbook flights, college overbook classes because some people will turn them down. So assuming 120 are accepted, you get an acceptance rate of 11.5%. Not as bad as 5% but still low.

But in either case, once you have made it to candidate's weekend, you have better than a 50% chance of getting in. So don't stress too much!

There are more deferred students than normal, I believe, but they also will accept more than the exact number of spots they are hoping to fill, just because not everyone who gets in will decide to attend. Like it has been said, getting to CW is the hardest part of the application process. Once you're there, you have a pretty good shot- just be yourself and enjoy it.

How is the interview process?

Was told they would offer about 110 for a class of 73. Yes, they had several deferrals and a higher yield than expected last year and given that it is hard for them to deal with extra students they will offer a few less then in the past.

That makes sense, oldolddad. Thanks for the new info.
