At first I wondered why I was admitted to Gemstone rather than Honors Humanities, considering my strong background and interest in music and the arts. Then I read over my niche section, and checked out the Gemstone page, and realized I had basically described Gemstone to the key. What you put in your niche section was obviously very important to their consideration. Had less to do with stats/ECs.

But if you're a strong candidate and seriously considering MD, have your guidance counseler call admissions and ask if you could be considered for Gemstone. They want academic superstars as much as the next institution. With strong stats you have plenty of bargaining power. I think they would want to accomodate you.

My son
Accepted: Government and Politics

ACT 32
SAT 1980
SAT II, Bio -690, US - 790, Math 1 720
GPA 4.2
White male, NY public
Lots of EC's
Excellent recs

Yeah I mean if I don't get good financial aid I'm gonna have to go to CP.

But no gemstone is ridiculous. I mean I answered the niche team question and wrote about how it would be of interest to me and gave examples and... it's just terribly strange.

^^^ Look, mistakes can happen! E-mail your regional rep if you know the person's name or ask your GC to do it.

Yeah I emailed a person in the office of admissions for Chem/Life sciences cuz we've been in contact via email and face to face meetings for a couple weeks now.

Just asked what it takes to get into Gemstone. Didn't wanna be confrontational about it.

I'm soo surprised i got gemstone. I thought i seriously was not and its weird now because although i haven't gotten scholarship info yet i do know most gemstone people get at least half rides and i said earlier last year that the only way i would go to UMD is if i got gemstone (which i thought i would never get) and now i might actually go to my state school. i guess i have to wait for Penn and NYU and see what happens

Accepted!!! But who knows if i got into the business school....... gotta wait for the letter haha...

Decision:accepted W/ Honors

Dude, no way :O.

If that's true I'm definitely going to CP, haha.

groovinhard - same here! i assume that you're instate? CP is a sweet deal as it is, would be even better with merit $

maybe next time i should say i estimate that roughly most gemstone people get half rides (like 8,000 a year) but don't quote me sorry for the confusion

xtefii -- your estimate is (unfortunately) pretty off. there are precious few scholarships given out at all, and very few over a few thousand dollars. i was invited to gemstone (although this was a few years ago and maybe they give out more scholarships now) and only received a $3000 one-year scholarship. from what i've heard, this is not uncommon. so try not to get your hopes up on the merit aid-- if there's one thing UMD sucks at, its that. :)

lindz0722 - i way off calculated. when did you get a notice for scholarships when you applied cause it didn't say anything in the packet i got today. i at least want something or else im going to indiana or boston college

Accepted w/ Honors! I got my letter this afternoon. Imma post my stats later though...
