i am lost..

I was waitlisted too :(. The letter says that 121 ppl in 2003 were accepted from waitlist -- 40 ppl in 2004.

I have the same question as duh. Since some ppl don't have "priority waitlist," is it someohow better?

Does anyone have actual statistics for Rice wailist? I need to decide if I should visit anyway.

Do you lose your deposit to your school you initially committed to if you are admitted off of Rice's waitlist?

I got accepted and have only a 1240 combining my highest sat scores if not its only 1190. I'm top 1% of class and have taken chingos of ap classes and i'm a mexican from washington state i guess that got me in. Sorry for all those that didn't get in.

JoyJoy, my guess is that you would lose your deposit to any school you commit to. I know in my son's case, we sent a deposit into Johns Hopkins and then he was accepted off the Rice waitlist. You really need to check the policy for each school. The thing to remember is you need to accept admission to one school, otherwise, if you don't eventually receive an offer from Rice, you'll be left out in the cold. Good luck!

I got the regular waitlist, and don't intend on submitting my name.

I am absolutely tired of fighting with this school. They've lied to my consoler, they speak of an unranked waitlist yet have "priority" spots, and they don't want me after two times around. I honestly cannot understand what was lacking in my application -- I GOT ACCEPTED RD AT DUKE, yet deferred ID and waitlisted RD at Rice.

I would go to Duke in a heartbeat, if my family could afford it, but Rice appeared to be the perfect match: close to home (I live in Dallas), reasonably priced, and with quality academics.

And now, since I'm waitlisted, I'm not eligible for merit-based scholarships, if I get chosen. If they really don't want me as a student, I won't continue to bother them with my application.

It's quite the disappointment.

(My stats, for those that wonder: 1530 (800M/730V), 800/750/730, 33 ACT, 2/52, 5's on 4 AP Tests, 4.55 GPA)

yamalbert:

I think you should start liking Duke...It will be about 7k more. You can get some loans and work. You can easily make up the difference. Get over it and let your life begin.

Yamalbert, I don't understand it either. You're stats are all better than my d's. But she wasn't trying for any of the more competitive schools within Rice because she's so undecided about what she wants to do. So maybe they gave her that priority letter because there's more space among the undecided applicants or something. Or maybe it's because she writes pretty well and they liked her essays. Either way, acceptance to Duke is an awesome accomplishment. Congratulations.

Who knows what the admissions counselors are thinking.

yamalbert, maybe rice thought you're too good for rice. i heard colleges in general do that, and often waitlist "too-above-average" people without very strong interests and later give them an acceptance and see if they're really interested. (of course if they're really interested, they will take an acceptance.) it will perhaps make colleges look better. (higher yield %) i dont like a term, but some people call it "Tuft Syndrom"

so whatever for these total headache caused by college admission.

p.s ; you shall be Very Very proud of acceptance into Duke. i know you and all others know, Duke is superb school with lots of strong programs and recognitions. congrats!

Rice does not play the admissions game.

If Rice doesn't play the admissions game, why do they ask you what other colleges you have applied?

Not that I really think it is true, but it is just wishful thinking, lol.

I have been accepted to couple of colleges which one should i pick? I have been accpeted to Barnard, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Davis, Swarthmore, Carleton, Uni of Rochester, Smith. I am from Bay Area, California and have been in the US for only four years. So which school do u recommend and why?
Thanks

JoyJoy - they keep statistics on where their applicants apply so that they know who their peer institutions are and how to compete with them. But I don't think they matter in individual admissons decisions much at all.
