Hi, I was just reading the yale supplement and it says "Referring to the Majors at Yale list in the Application Instructions, enter the code number and name of the major you would be most likely to choose at Yale if you had to make your choice today."

Although I have heard someone says it is okay if you put "undecided", the question here does sound quite compelling as if you must put down one, now. So can we still put undecided? how does it affect us if we do?

I put undecided. Obviously I don’t know if it affected me at all, but it clearly wasn’t a big factor because I was accepted to Yale. Don’t worry about it and don’t try to game it by picking a mjor you think they’d like to see. If you have somethin gyou like put it down, if not just put undecided and spend your time worrying about the essays:)

Yale info sessions stress that “declared major” is only a point of curiosity and has no bearing on how they view your application overall. Hope this helps.

FYI: I put down “Chemistry” despite getting B’s my Junior year in Honors Chem. I was taking AP Chem as a Senior. It didn’t affect my chances – LOL

^ Just curious, did you take Chem 118a from Mark Johnson, or one of the orgo sequences in your freshman year and plan to follow up with two semesters of p-chem later (since you will be a chem major)? Maybe a selected few brave ones go directly to p-chem. I suspect that most students who have taken AP chem will not take the regular general chemistry (Is it Chem 116 or 114?).

mcat: I attended quite a while ago and switched outta Chem after Frosh year. I took Chem 115 and Lab 116 (don’t know current intro level class designations).

I doubt that few of my 115 classmates didn’t take AP Chem, frankly. I can’t say what the routes for those more Chemically inclined that I was would have taken. LOL

T26E4: DS thought he was going to be a chemistry major and switched outta Chem after Frosh year also, just like you. Actually, his assigned academic advisor freshman year was from the Chemistry department, probably because his “declared major” at college application time was Chemistry.

I heard that 115 (or 114 or 114a/115b in some other years) covered more topics than 118a. It is rumored that 118a is like a very friendly/mild introduction to (downsized) p-chem, rather than a traditional general chemistry class. DS somewhat regrets that he did not take 114/115 at that time (if he knew he would switch outta Chem. Strictly speaking, he has never been a chem major. How would he know what major he will be in when he was a high schooler!)

It may be true that almost all students have had many APs under their belt. It is rumored that even students who take the most basic “music 101” have had many years of classical music training. LOL.
