Deerfield Essay

I am so sad. I have 2 days to finish essays because I am going to Boston on the 4th. So sad. So sad.
I don't know what to do. Does anyone else feel like you would do anything to avoid them? I sat at my computer for a whole day and didn't write a word. advice!?

Ya...get off of here and start writing lol

hey yall

does the app have to be postmarked on jan 15th or it has to arrive in the office by the 15th? my mom says it has to arrive in the office by 15th and not to send it in last minute (is that possible?!)

It has to be postmarked by January 15.

I'm not 100% sure about my DF essay like I am my others. Can a few people read it for me and just give me the genuine vibe you get from it. All I need to know is first impression of me as a person and whatever vibe you got from it...thats really important to me in my essays and would love to get some critique.

I totally would read yours but I, too, am writing DA's essay so I don't know if that would be the best idea, sorry :-(

Alrite then no problem....ya preferably people who are NOT applying to deerfield or have sent in their apps already. Or parents...w.e , just want another opinion.

Also would be better if your in highschool, not necessary just a preference

what's the deerfirled essay topic?

grrr... CC is just so addicting...

Just tell your future faculty advisor about yourself...your goals..achievements..stuff thats shaped you life. Pretty general..just talk about yourself.

wow really!?
that must be so much easier to write than the SPS ones!

yes indeed

hey guys

I was just wondering why deerfield isnt as recognized, mentioned or prestigious as exeter, andover or SPS?

really? deerfield's prestige is up there in the playing fields of exeter, andover, sps, and many other great schools. it may be because you might have been around people who favor those three schools a lot? i don't know, but for the most part, deerfield's prestige is very high. well at least in my opinion

Deerfield is way up there in terms of prestige. It has the 5th highest endowment of any NE boarding schools, an SAT average of 2020, SSAT average 89%, and a really old foundation date of 1797. There are, of course, other amazing aspects of it including its athletics, but it's an extremely strong school all around.

I think the main reason you've heard more about Andover and Exeter is their sheer size. Deerfield has 600 kids and Andover and Exeter have over 1,000. As for SPS? I can't really explain that. I hadn't heard of SPS until I arrived at Deerfield and had an interview in which my interviewer compared Deerfield to SPS. I had to ask what SPS was.

sps is pretty famous too

personally i think it's the prestige thing. every well-regarded school today does have some degree of publicity and "fame", but usually real prestige and "elitism" comes discreetly. only someone in the know would really recognize these schools. and i think all boarding schools maintain some level of prestige because unless you're applying or know someone who's at a boarding school, you mostly likely have never heard of andover/exeter/etc. but because places like andover and exeter are so huge, also because andover is considered the first boarding school in america and exeter was a sort of "branched off" school (not saying it still is, just from its history) so usually the first is considered the best (look at half the ivy league schools)

They may be all famous in the boarding school-circle of people, but NONE of my friends, and so far NONE of my teachers in public school have EVER heard of Exeter or Andover or SPS, etc. Except for the ones that actually applied there, of which there are like... Actually, there's only one.

Think of pianos. Everyone knows the name Steinway as "the best" and some of them are truly remarkable instruments (It's what I own). But unless you are a serious pianist, you may not know some of the other makers; like Bosendorfer, Bechstein or Fazioli, which are to some, superior. Jazz players like one type, classical - others. There are other really great instruments depending on the date of manufacture, etc. It's the same thing with school. Exeter and Andover may be the only boarding schools that the average guy on the street has heard of, but for people "in the know" there are many others.....even some not mentioned on this board (eGAD!)

Totally don't agree.

i like that analogy

All my friends know about Andover and Exeter, and we live thousands of miles away! They think they know that these are the best of the best, and was difficult to explain to them why I would bother apply and leave home to go to a school other than Exeter or Andover. Now they get it...there are smaller, just as good schools.
