I got deferred a while back and i must admit, i think i just got deferred becuase Mich felt like it had to respond to me and didnt really defer me based on stats/exc/whatever. Anyone else feel like this?

Wait, I don't understand. Do you feel like they deferred you because they had to respond? Or what?

then wut about me? i didnt get any responds~

thats exactly what im thinking. Since there have been so many deferrals over rejections i feel as if Michigan is just deferring because they dont have time to thorougly look over many of the apps and make a decision

So , according to you - the admissions office randomly chooses applications to be deffered? If i judge you on that - I would expect a rejection.

How do you know there have been more defferals than rejections?

You will get a decision by the 15th or so they say. Good Luck.

flong, first off, I'm going to assume that you're getting your information from CC in general. That in itself is a poor representation of the overall applicant pool. The people on CC tend to be either extremely strong applicants, or borderline, and everyone in between.

You don't see many rejections because the sample size, isn't really... an accurate description of the applicants to U Mich. At my school alone, we had over 50 people apply out of a class of around 250. People from a 1.9 GPA, to a 4.0 GPA applied. You don't really see the lower end here. No offense to anyone but people who go on CC, tend to be pretty serious about their college admissions.

I might be wrong, but I think a user that works in the admissions department actually denied claims of this (deferring more than rejection). When U Mich makes a decision, they tend to give a HUGE time quote. I was quoted for a 10-12 week decision, and I got mine in 4-5 weeks. And my case wasn't uncommon. So, I don't think that they defer you because they want to do as many applications as possible. I think it's the possibility that you were borderline, and that they want to see your second semester grades.

But it's all speculation on my part, I don't have the data to back up my claims, apart from what I've seen and heard.

I was hoping deferrals were based on merit and not because they were short on time and needed to defer some of the apps.

my stats are:
2140 730 cr, 720 w 690 m
730 2c
670 physics
3.4 u mich gpa (-_-')
Microsoft internship (2 sent recs from Microsoft employers) <--(this is what probably got me deferred)
and 300 tutoring hours..

however, my 1st semester grades sucked. i got an A+ in my regular college prep class but all B's in my AP classes (3 of them) so i guess i should expect a rejection and im OOS!

Deferrals are based on merit. Very rarely will a extremely poor student get deferred as opposed to rejected. On the other hand, borderline students will probably get deferred...

Why would you think an internship would get you deferred?

I did an internship overseas, in a unknown company compared to Microsoft, and I think that's one of the strongest parts of my app, along with my essays.

for high school students---do they ask for you to send updated grades in your deferral letter? What exactly does it say? As a CC student I cant really send in anything official and they dont ask for it in the letter.

There was a discussion in the NYU thread? or one awhile back but

A guy said that what he did is he got grades from his teachers, very professionally done, with comments and signatures.

And then he just sent it in like that.

I doubt you need anything that official, since even after you get accepted, they still do request for your final official grades. If they are too low, you can get your admissions revoked.

Cuz i know Microsoft has a presence at U Michigan and frankly with a 3.4 u mich gpa and being OOS, there must have been a big reason why I was deferred intsead of flat out rejected

Ah, you meant it as a good thing :o

I think your internship and your SAT scores is what got you deferred. Possibly also how hard your classes are?

What's your GPA for this semester?

i got an A+ in my college prep class and B's in my 3 AP classes. I always took hard classes lol. i had 3 honors soph year, 3 aps and a honor juinor year and 3 aps senior year. But at this point..ive kinda..given up LOL. I think waitlist might be the best i get

wut about the people who never got any replies?
defer nor rejection
i heard people who have got no decision at all have better chance to get in than the people who got deferred.
And you guys will find this weird if you see my stats
SAT: 1850 (real low)
SAT2: MAth2c: 740
GPA: 3.8 uw
AP: AP Calculus AB (90% in-class), AP Physics B (97% in-class) [our school only offers three AP courses)
EC: UN club - president
Leo club - executive
MUN - executive
Peer tutor and mentor
etc..~
Essay: decent
Status: international
Compared to flong's stats, i think i actually have extremely lower chance to get in.

eh midget..seeing how my luck has been going i woudlnt compare urself to me EVERRR. i've been rejection mania last few days

me too..
this ones my last hope.. nowhere else to go except uiuc, which i personally dont want to go, since i got admitted to LAS general when i appled for engineering

I hate being deferred... It sucks SO MUCH. So late in the game too, too bad I like Michigan so much... it wouldn't hurt this much if I didn't like it.

yeah when i got deferred my heart skipped a beat. But at this point, I know that UCSD has a top 10 undergrad econ program and its in a beautiful area...so ive accepted the fact as a deferred person my chances of getting in poor and moved on ; /

u got into ucsd? congrats~ i got rejected lol.
damn!! i really really really want michigan!!!!!!!

wuts funny is that when i first applied to these universities, u mich was not my first choice. it was like my 5th choice. but now that i got admitted to some and rejected to some, i just wanna goto u mich cause they havent given me decision yet
