i got deferred from early action, now what can i do to turn that around?

i have visited the school, but it wasnt a guided tour because i went with a friend who has a sibling that goes there. so does that mean it looks like i havent shown any interest?

any ideas on what i can do to let them know they are one of my top three choices?

and, there is really no way i can go and visit again- i have already had a really great tour and it is quite a drive from jersey to boston.

I'd send them a letter stating it was your first choice. DO they have ED--if not even better---I'd tell them if they had, I would have applied ED with the committment that i'd attend if accepted..that's how bad you wanted to go. Take a look at your app..maybe there is something you cna do to make sure this doesn't happen at your other two top choices.

He did apply ED, actually at NEU it's non binding EA. I would call the admissions office and ask some questions...you can also go to the website for the school and find your regional admissions person...talk to that person via email. No advice after 117 views because it seems obvious to me. You have to do some work now. Go through the posts on this forum, I have already posted the link to the regional adcoms. Also do some searching of forums on deferrals. Many have already posted about how to "overcome" a deferral. Keep your grades up, they may be on the fence because they want to see your first semester grades. Good luck, now get to work.

Non binding EA is alot different than someone who applies ED. Nothing says I love you to an adcom like ED....The yield at most schools for EA applicants is the same as RD..30% or so. There is nothing the schools standds to gain through EA like they do through ED. That is why a letter referencing NEU being a first choice would be helpful..and the good news is the applicant still doesn't have to commit because they are now in the RD pool.

flyboy so he should tell NEU that they are his first choice but then look around and not comit because he is in the RD pool? Hmm. I still suggest the OP do his homework, decide if NEU is his first choice and then, if it is, go after it. If it is not or the OP is on the fence, then just wait it out. NEU doesn't have ED by the way.

edit>> i have a 4.0 uw gpa, a 5.2 weighted gpa, but my sats scores are an 1170.

as for sending them a letter stating it is my first choice, it truly isnt. it would be my first choice if financially there was no issue. so i dont feel right sending them a letter saying they are my first choice if they truly arent.

as for talking to the regional admissions officer- is it adequate enough to just ask what i can do to improve my chances, or do they want to hear something more specific?

anddd, since everyone is calling me a male id like to point out that i am female. ^_^ although, judging from the word 'daisy' i am a bit surprised how that got confused.

Never thought you were male...anyway...since you never provided much detail on stats, ec's etc...it would appear the reason is definitley the 1170. What are your other toop two choices and tell me more about your file, maybe I can make some helpful suggestions if you want them.

I have a bunch of community service hours, as well as work experience.

6 honors classes(english 1+2, algebra 2, chemistry, history 1+2, biology), 3 AP classes(physics, history, english 3), and then 3 more AP classes my senior year(psychology, biology, english 4)

as for AP testing- i got a 4 on my history exam and a 3 on my english. i did not take the physics exam because of money, and knowing if i did get a 4 or a 5 i would be taking the class in college anyway.

this year i am getting dual credit at gloucester county community college for my 3 ap classes (bio, psych, and english). i dont know if it will count or not since some colleges only count the credit if you actually take it at another college, and i took it at my highschool.

as for my other schools- university of the sciences in philadelphia, university of connecticut, and rutgers. i have gotten into USP and UCONN. i thought rutgers was more of a long shot then northeastern, and im pretty sure my chances of getting into rutgers pharmacy are slim.

It sounds like you applied to the pharmacy program? If so, it is definitely your SAT score that is hurting you. Which school is your first choice? Are you in state for UConn? They are very different schools. I went to UConn, my son is at NEU. If you really prefer NEU, you can ask the adcom what can be done to improve your chances and tell them you really want to attend NEU. As far as finances, you may get some merit aid, do you qualify for any need based aid?

yes i applied for the pharm program, and nope i am not a connecticut resident, i am a new jersey resident.

as for financial- i send out the fasfa yesterday. my mother is a single parent and only makes 13k a year. however we receive social security because of my fathers death.

im not sure how much i will get, but hopefully it wil be a large amount. however because of the social security my family gets- me, my mom, and my brother - im not sure what i qualify for, if i qualify for anything.

First, best of luck to you on the Financial Aid side. You should qualify for decent aid, but you will need to have all your acceptances and weigh your decision. You should also factor in how much of the aid is in the form of loans which you will have to pay back eventually.
Have you visited UConn and NEU? If you haven't and you have questions about the area, etc. I can probably give you some feel for them both. Just quickly here: NEU is right in Boston. There are two "T" stops on campus. Everything is accessible. It feels like a campus even though it is in the city.
UConn is in the town I grew up in. It is a very rural, residential area. To give you an idea, the town has about 5,000 residents and the University has something like 20,000 students. There isn't much outside of the campus to do. To go to a movie theater you have to drive about 15 minutes off campus. UConn's pharm program has a good reputation, as does NEUs. Obviously, there are always jobs for pharmacists, so you don't really need to worry about whether any one school is more prestigious than another. My advice would be to consider whether you want rural or urban, to talk to your regional adcom from NEU and press your case, and then to weigh your financial offers. I'll look for the link I posted earlier about NEU adcoms. If I find it easily, I'll repost. If you have other questions, feel free to PM me.

Unfortunately - and not that NEU does - but looking at SATs alone, daisy's are on the low end compared to NEU's current overall average (not sure what it is for pharmacy?); they have been trying to increase their academic ratings over the past few years and they hope to have their average SAT score somewhere in the mid-1200s within the next few years. Plus they get a huge number of applicants. So I expect this is one reason for the deferral and being accepted may depend a lot on what the rest of the application pool for the pharmacy program looks like.

But it's great that you only got deferred!!! And I'd agree that the difference in the RD round might be more expressed interest. Best of luck to you!

I got deferred from NEU also. I contacted my regional admissions guy there and he told me to send them additional information. So I sent them an informal page essay expressing why I want to be a nurse and why I want to study at their school. Also, I included some other information. I'm crossing my fingers :-)

your chances for getting in regular might be better as it is pretty well known that northeastern is a safety for many students. They use merit money to lure some very competitive students, but, they may still end up going up a more competitive school.

might be but if you were deferred and really want to attend now is the time to be proactive. NEU's stats are climbing and acceptance rate is lowering...each person who was deferred should evaluate their particular situation but if you were deferred and want to attend don't just wait and assume that they will accept you.
