I sent them a letter. I re-wrote my essays. My guidance counselor called. I re-took a not very good Math Ic and did better (but not stellar). I know they say there is a 1/10 chance, but it seems like if they had wanted me, they would've taken me before.

My SATs are ok (2130) but I am #1/770 kids in a suburban hs.

All in all it may be 1/10, but 60% of valedictorians get accepted. Don't worry - there's not much you can do at this point, so it's fruitless to get too anxious over it. In the meantime, just know that you stand a good chance.

You should have called, not our GC.

why not? I think its better, he's pretty articulate.

You should have called, not had your GC; it shows more initiative. It's first person, not third. Would you rather have your best man give a toast at your wedding, or a random stranger who is pretty articulate?

That analogy is pretty much not the point.

If you called, what would you say?? "I just wanted to let the adcoms know that I am trying really hard despite the great senioritous epidemic that is creeping around my high school's corridors..." I think the GC should have called, but still, what did he say? who did he talk to?

hey, i am new to this site but i am not sure any call will help unless the gc knows the admissions office. think of how many possible gc calls they get and its not like hes going to call and trash you. it is like the teacher recs we do. who asks their worst teacher for one! It takes little effort to make a call or email. The best thing you did was the letter, rewriting the essays and retaking a test. that shows a lot of effort and work and i would be impressed with that.

Thanks. I hope that they can see that.
I wonder if the issue though is simply that they took one kid from our school and aren't going to take any others. That one was an all-state athlete but no higher grades or SATs. If they decided to just go with one from our school though, then the quota is filled.

I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure there's not a "quota" for certain schools. Also, I'm basically in the same boat as you--wrote a letter, but had the GC call. Hopefully that's okay!

Hopefully, it is enough. Good luck, I hope to see you there!
