Deferred EA Today

Pretty surprised to be deferred. B+, 1800 SAT, NYC private school, Africa/India trips, captain soccer team. What's the deal?

My D was deferred too - similar stats, OOS. Might be that they want to see if students are interested enough to follow up with additional information (bringing up the yield from EA applicants), or it might have been that they’re waiting to see what their entire applicant pool looks like for majors that aren’t large.

D applied through their free application. D loved the school, but wanted some financial aid to bring the OSS cost down. (It doesn’t look like they offer much money to OSS students.) Her fingers are crossed.

Sorry, you were really competitive. I think they have a holistic approach to admissions.

Greenpal, did you have any other EC’s besides soccer and those trips? That is the only weakness I see.

Sorry for the delay guys. Yes, I am a major volunteer for the NYC Alzheimer’s Association (I brought them to my school and will be speaking at other schools), a starter on the varsity basketball team, founder of the school Green Club, and have a comic in the school newspaper.

sorry to hear about the deferral. Reasonable to be surprised and disappointed. Do remember that a deferral is not a no. Makes for a long wait til the next letter though. Keep your spirits up

My S was deferred last year with B+ and 1920 SATs. Good ECs too. He kept in touch with his admission counselor via email. Let him know that it was his first choice. Sent in mid-year grades. Sent admission counselor an update on ECs… projects he was working on, etc. Not sure if this helped, but it didn’t hurt. He got in RD and is currently a freshman at UVM. He absolutely loves it!

Thanks guys.

My D was deferred today also from the free app/ the VIP application. Her SATs were 1900, B+ with excellent ECs. I agree that I think they want to know if you are interested enough to follow up with additional info but I found it odd that they would “defer” you to regular decision when regular decision is now. Any other VIP applicants out there who also got deferred??

Yes, my son was deferred to the regular decision pool from his VIP application. It’s too bad, actually, because it had been his first choice and there’s nothing like a deferral to take the wind out of your sails. Still waiting.

My D was also deferred in the EA pool but was received a letter on 2/19 that she was in. She is very excited!!
