UVA Deferred

Hi. Deferred from UVA here. I'm out-of-state. Just wanted to start a thread in the uva forum to see y'all's thoughts. I don't have any specific questions. Just wanted to see what else y'all think we can do before April and maybe what factors might have contributed to this decision for us.....

I was deferred too, but honestly I am pretty happy considering I wasn’t flat-out rejected and seeing how intense the early action pool was this year! I’m OOS state too, from New York. I think it was my test scores that got me deferred, had a 29 ACT and didn’t send SAT II’s (which is why I thought I would get rejected!). Hopefully we have a good shoot regular decision!

My daughter also got deferred. Out of State, 32 on ACT, very high GPA. I think I am more disappointed than her.

Is UVA known to outright reject many at all in EA? My D got deferred as well. OOS, 33 ACT, really high GPA, etc. She has really great choices already so I think she is fine.

My son just found out he was deferred. He has an interview tomorrow for Jefferson Scholarship. I wonder if a deferred student has any chance at all of getting this scholarship. OOS, 32 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, 11 AP’s (all 4s and 5s), dual enrollment calculus, several EC, and lots of community service

Deferred OOS, 2270 SAT, 3.85+ GPA. Hopefully my strong first semester will help. Wish I had other options lined up already, but thanks to other deferrals, I’ll be waiting until late March. Until then, I’m stuck here questioning myself again.

I was deferred before ultimately being admitted to UVA in 2006. I know admissions are a bit different today since ED was around then vs EA today, but here are some things I did:

 1. Write a letter expressing continued interest and had my counselor send it (and my counselor made some calls because he was upset I was deferred… Do not let your parents make calls)
 2. Sent all dual enrollment transcripts from the fall with A’s with mid year report
 3. Dropped AP German for study hall because I figured I wasn’t getting into UVA and I wanted to enjoy my senior year
 4. Was admitted to a rolling admissions school so I had a back up plan
 5. Made sure to apply only to schools I would rather go to than the back up rolling school (only applied to 2 other schools - got into 1 and got waitlisted at 1) and assumed I wasn’t getting into UVA (It was a 10% acceptance rate after deferral back then, I know there are statistics that show it is much higher than this today)
 6. Made plans to go to a hockey game with a friend the day regular decisions came out so that I would not be upset twice
 7. Celebrated when I got in RD

I also had a funny story when people continuously asked where I was going to college before April, I said I was accepted to Harvard but I had decided to take a year off… just kidding. Their faces were priceless and I didn’t have to talk about the deferral.

FWIW, I ended up being Phi Beta Kappa, so deferral is NOT a reflection of your academic potential at UVA, especially OOS. Do not let your child think it had anything to with them. It is a huge dice roll and they just ended up not on the top side of the die. I think most admissions are just B.S. these days, especially after what I went through and later achieved. Admissions have nothing to do with who will be a successful student anymore. It is all about in state vs out of state, yields, money, etc. I was also admitted to Vanderbilt, and I know it is because I had decent enough grades and was Jewish (during that time period, Jewish enrollment at Vanderbilt went from 2% to 10+% and they were making a new Jewish center and there were even articles about this). I felt really uncomfortable being on the opposite side of the coin (admitted but not being any more qualified than anyone else applying, and was I less qualified?) as well. I am glad UVA ultimately admitted me and I was able to prove that they should not have deferred me in the first place.

@Larkey

Almost all, if not all, of the Jefferson Scholars are Echols/Rodman (which is given out EA) although I do hear rumors that there are a few far and few in between who aren’t.

Thank you 10iswarrior. Maybe DS will be one of those few and far betweeners.

Interesting to see these deferrals. I was rejected EA. OOS, 34 ACT, 3.9 Weighted GPA, Great EC’s, In my opinion good essays, not quite sure why. Oh well, good luck to all of you that were deferred in the next round!

I was deferred as well. OOS, 33 ACT and I have no idea what my GPA is unweighted but it’s a 4.27 weighted. I was deferred at Harvard as well and have yet to hear any other decisions so still in limbo. Oh well!

DS was deferred. We are in-state, 4.0u/4.3w, 7 AP’s, top 10%, SAT 1320/2010. Sad that it’s so hard to get into a state school - but I know they get so many super qualified applicants. We’re bummed but happy he still has a shot down the road.

My D took the deferral probably better than I did. I think she’s optimistic that she still has a shot. OOS/NMSF/32 ACT/98+change weighted GPA/top 4%. Good luck to all!

I was deferred as well, and initially was shocked, but considering I’m OOS and reading this thread I’m not surprised. 4.9583 GPA, 10 AP classes, 4 honors society, 10 years of Tae Kwon-Do, all A’s…they’re just REALLY tough this year it seems, although they traditionally have a ridiculously low OOS acceptance rate any way.

I was also deferred from UVA. Out-of-state, 1500/2300 SAT, 800s on US and World History, 4.53 weighted GPA, ECs were average. Is it true that many in-state applicants apply early and it is thus harder to get in early if you’re OOS/easier to get in regular decision if you’re OOS?

FWIW, I am in Hazel’s boat. Mind you, my kids were in elementary school when she was deferred, but I sent a note to the Dean then (Dean Blackburn- he was fabulous) with an article in the paper about the department I want to study in and a note saying how much I wanted to go to UVA. Mainly I kept my grades high, though. Come April, the “fat” envelope was in my mailbox and I sat on the curb and cried with happiness. My neighbor called my mom in a panic when she spotted this out her window and my poor mother must have been dreading having to come out to fetch me. It was all good though! Good luck to you all. A deferral is NOT a denial. Just keep showing UVA why you belong!

Deferred in-state. 2210 SAT/3.9 GPA/top 10%

Very disappointed with the deferral, not exactly sure what to do now.

My D was deferred—OOS, 2250 SAT, 4.6 weighted GPA, top 5%. Great ECs. We were both pretty surprised. She looked on Naviance and in the past no one at her high school with her qualifications had ever been deferred or rejected. So the competition is intense this year; in fact, I think that was the exact word that was used in her deferral email. Keep the faith, all you deferrees. It’s not over yet.

It seems REALLY competitive this year. Another friend of mine with similar credentials in addition to be captain of the XC team was also deferred.

Son deferred withGPA 3.85, 4.0 weighted. ACT 34, good essays, NHS,
2 varsity sports and captain of one. Hundreds of Community service hours, Spanish and Chinese language…hard year this year, but here is hoping for a good outcome in RD round
