^^^^^ i was looking more to email to re-enforce my desire to attend/tell them that i would attend if accepted. just to really tell them how much i love their school and how much i want to attend (my counselor told me to email the dean and the regional admissions counselor) and to maybe set up an interview to better my chances of being accepted

Obviously, your counselor has more expertise than I do on college admissions, but I don’t see what good emailing the dean would do. They don’t handle individual applications, so they would most likely just forward the email to the counselor who is handling your application anyways.

Does someone have the deferral FAQ? My daughter was deferred, but all I see now is her application information on the site. Also, I noticed it shows her teacher rec as being received in late November. Would this have affected the decision? It’s my understanding her school sent everything in advance of 11/1, but if the teacher rec wasn’t actually sent until later, would that have been a factor?

No, it says on the faq that that isn’t a factor, sorry.

It wouldn’t be a factor, but you should stay on top of it for other schools she applied to if her school already had issues. Make sure you check and double check the application portals so you know if things havent been sent.

Hi guys! Just thought I’d share with you, a friend of mine who has a really high GPA and also got differed from Northeastern called the admissions office basically to ask why she was deferred. They told her that because they had so many applications they set an ACT and SAT cutoff. They didn’t even look at anyone’s application who didn’t have at least a 2080 SAT (I think, it may have been give or take 10 points) or a 31 ACT. Don’t know if that makes you feel better or worse but just thought I’d share.

@neh1996 it’s hard to believe that they actually set a cut off after stressing how they look at the whole picture, and especially since they specifically stated that they didn’t defer anyone because of one number in the deferral letter.

Can’t be true. My son had a 2000 & was accepted. He had a 3.9 UW & is National Hispanic Scholar though, so they may have made an exception for a hook or had different cutoffs for URMs.

I misspoke, it was 2000 not 2080. And it was most majors but not all. Also, no offense @soxfan07, but do you really think they would broadcast that they set a cutoff? You can believe me or not, but I got the information directly from the admissions officer for my area.

Sorry, but that’s definitely not true. On the day of the decisions, there were several people that were accepted with SATs much lower than 2000. There were also people denied with SATs much higher. The fact of the matter is, you can’t base it on just one thing. Every college weights things differently, and so do the majors within the college. Northeastern is no different. I have a friend at Northeastern, and I have made extensive contact with my regional admissions counselor since I was deferred. They have both said the same thing; it’s about the whole package. Don’t try to do anything new now, because they’re going to know it’s out of desperation. The best thing to do is email your regional admissions counselor and say you would definitely enroll if accepted, if that is the case. Explain why the school is a good fit for you. Sound knowledgeable on the program you intend to pursue. Discuss anything special about you. Ask questions. Fill them in on anything new since November. Above all, do not sound desperate. If you can’t handle a deferment with grace; they are not going to be impressed.

First of all, as I just said, it was not for all majors, but for a lot of them. And secondly, I did not say that all people at or above those scores were accepted, they were the ones reviewed in lots of the majors. Thirdly, I’m not saying this to try and explain away why I was deferred. I thought I was going to be deferred anyways. This has nothing to do with “handling a deferment with grace”. I heard this directly from my regional admissions officer. And also, if you look at previous posts on this thread, I am not the only one who was told this. Also, he said that they only did this for early admission because they had too many applicants to review in the allotted time. They are not doing this for regular admissions as well, it was just that for a lot of the majors, they didn’t have enough time to look at the whole package for every single person and still get their early admissions decisions out on time, so they had to put some people off until regular decision.

EveCali - really? You seem to report different stats on every thread. What are your actual stats?

@EveCali I agree with @Snowdog

you say 2.9, 1460, 21 here but on another one you posted:

Unweighted GPA: 3.5
SAT: 2230
Took 3 APs Junior year and taking 3 this year (I’m a senior).
SAT II Math 2 and Chem are both around 700.
Don’t know about class rank…

I know that you may think that the rest of us are ridiculous for caring, but some of us are worried or we do care about our future.

So I would appreciate it if you stopped making fun of those of us that care about our futures.

A moderator has deleted EveCali’s post.

Good I have seen her everywhere…annoying

I know this is old. On the topic of a cutoff, it is totally unfair. Not necessarily in the sense of who to admit. Rather, I paid money for them to review my application, if they used a cutoff, it would be like offering the promise of a ‘service’ without actually providing said service.

I agree @KosherBacon. I highly doubt that neh1996 was expressing factual information. In their earlier post, they said they heard it from a friend who heard it from their regional admissions counselor. After I challenged their statement, they claimed they heard it themselves. I myself asked my regional admissions counselor about this subject, and he said it was completely untrue. Even based on the stats of all the people who were accepted and denied; it cannot be true.

Some people are just trying to rationalize being deferred.

It was my friends email. I said “I” because I read the email myself.

Like I said, you don’t have to believe me. I just had a lot of friends who were certain they would get in based on their gaps and didn’t who were incredibly upset. I just figured a lot of people would be in the same situation so I shared what I knew in an effort to help. I’m sorry if I upset anyone. To the person who said they were upset because they paid money for their application to be reviewed( my guidance counselor that cutoffs are actually quite common among the larger schools.
