Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

@nasoth did you specifically ask why you were deferred?

@as1799 nope, I already knew my gpa was low. I guess she took the time to look me up on her own.

@nasoth wow. That’s dedication

@nasoth - That is the EXACT reply we received today as well. From a different counselor.

I sent my letter yesterday around noon and she responded this morning around 9AM.

"Thank you for contacting me and for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application, along with the updates that you have shared in this email. The University received a record breaking 32,500 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive and we were not able to admit all of the qualified students that applied.

Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Please submit your mid-year grades when they become available so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April.

Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so I would encourage you to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns."

@bsangs the recalculated gpa and act part as well?

@bsangs the 1st one has a personal touch as well since the account which was pasted this email hasnt shown that it also says Dear… in the 1st one

For the people that wrote a letter of interest: how did you start it? “Hey I was deferred but…” Or what? Haha thanks

@c011e9e just start of with ‘Hi (name)’ and then write first few lines saying you were deferred and would like to show your continued interest in joining, next update them with any awards, achievements since you applied in EA as well as how you thing UofM is the best fit for you. In the end just say that you are very eager to join, and assure them you will enrol if accepted. Somehow try to keep it brief, the counselor will have many leters of interest, he prob wont read all of it if too long.

Also very important do not forget to put your UofM ID AND application number, very very important, he most probably will need it to identify you in the applications pool and flag you or put your letter of interest in it. Hope that helps

@c011e9e I followed this guide http://collegeapps.about.com/od/theartofgettingaccepted/fl/How-to-Write-a-Letter-of-Continued-Interest.htm

@APlennox @liveForWat thank you both!

Deferred in state; 31 ACT, 4.0 UW, 4.15 W, 20/200 class rank, good ECs, solid essays.

Feel like my class rank was the downfall as people above me with lower ACTs were accepted, but there’s still a chance. steady climb in class rank since freshman year

My response was:

"Hello UofMorMSU,

We are sorry that you didn’t receive the decision you were hoping for from the University of Michigan. The University received a record breaking 32,500 early action freshmen applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Thank you for letting us know about your continued interest in Michigan and please know that we will note that interest in your application. Please also make sure that you have your 7th semester grades sent to Michigan once those are available.

As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you by early April and appreciate your patience as you await a final decision. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also encourage you to explore the other opportunities available to you.
Please feel free to contact me or (other admissions officer) if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Have a great holiday break!

Best,
(Admissions Counselor)"

Also my counselor sent an email to them on my behalf and the response was

"Hi (counselor),

Thank you following up with both Shannon and I regarding UofMorMSU’s application to U-M. We received over 32,000 applications for Early Action and each application was given full consideration. As you can imagine, our phones and emails have been busy since yesterday’s release. These are not the not so fun conversations, but I hope you have some excited students on your case load.

Encourage (UofMorMSU) to finish his senior year strong and to please update us with his fall semester grades. Once these grades are received we will be able to evaluate the application with the updated information during our regular decision process. Also, if his interest continues we would love to hear from him as well. Have a much deserved holiday break.

Best,
Admissions officer"

Are these good responses? Also note that my counselor sent her email before I sent mine. What do you all think?

My response… Similar to others…

The response mentioned an "updated ACT score… I didn’t say anything about an ACT score in my letter, and they were on my list to receive my September ACT which they would’ve gotten by the time I got my application submitted.
So I assume they just copied and pasted. But at least my letter is in… Now to restart the waiting game. :slight_smile:
"On behalf of our Director Erica Sanders and myself I thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan. Please be assured that it has been noted in my evaluation of your application, along with the updated ACT score. The University received a record breaking 32,500 early action freshmen applications this year, so admission is still very competitive. Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Please your 1st semester senior year grades once available so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application. Other than that, there is nothing further we need from you at this time and we ask you do not send any additional materials.

As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April and appreciate your patience as you await a final decision. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also encourage you to explore the other opportunities available to you.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Thank you"

I just sent my letter of interest but got an automated response that my admissions rep was out of office until January. Will he see it by then or should I send it again when he gets back to office?

send it again when he gets back @jcanty1998, just to be on the safe side

@jcanty1998 he’ll see it. It may take him a little bit to get through all of the emails that he receives while on break, but he’ll read it and add it to your file.
Because you don’t want to be annoying.

edit just kidding i’m stupid

How did you guys find out your counselor’s email?

I think when you tell them you want to switch they would make you re-write that essay
