@nasoth In you letter did you ask why you were deferred? It seems like the counselor answered that question in the response
@kat1130 no. I’m not sure why she included that. I already figured that my gpa was the reason.
Do you think it will be okay if we send our letter of continued interest after winter break? I didn’t have time to get my local Michigan Admission Officer’s info this week.
OOS deferred by LSA…
IB bilingual dip predicted 40; SAT 1470 E710 M760; adequate activities; Legacy.
I am writing my letter of continued interest right now and I am wondering to whom I should send it to??
Should I directly reply the deference email? or Director Sanders? or should I send it to my regional councilor??
Will an updated IB predicted 43 and two SAT subject test in Jan help?
Best luck to everyone!
@soymilk23 @422525 The counselors’ emails are all on the undergrad admissions webpage, just google “UMich Undergrad Admissions contact info” and it’ll have you select your region to give you your counselor’s info.
@nasoth - No, not the recalculated part. I’m sorry, I meant to mention that. Everything else was verbatim.
@jcanty1998 thanks for that information. Should I email them during the break or wait until after? I’m worried if I send it over the break they won’t see it.
@soymilk23 Personally I would send it after winter break as right now they are just trying to enjoy the holidays and do not want to be going through all these emails from deferred students. Just my opinion though. There not in the office and they don’t have your application in hand to really make any note on your application or to give you the best information if they do respond right now, so I’d just wait for a more convenient time. Probably a couple days after they come back too when they will have more time to seriously look at your email.
I don’t have any experience in this and am just recommending what I’ expect to be best, if anyone with more knowledge wants to correct me then go ahead.
I got deferred… In state. Umich weighted GPA: 3.68, weighted GPA: 3.775. I have 2 years varsity tennis, along with NHS and decent EC’s. 1460 SAT and 30 ACT. I also have legacy and 9 AP classes. People with GPA’s around mine at my school got deferred for the most part. I got the first letter of deferment and really think that umich had a cap on GPA and only read applications meeting a certain GPA requirement since the letter can imply that they never got to read the application.
If you were deferred but 100% sure that you would go to Michigan if you were accepted, then have your guidance counselor or school college counselor write a letter saying that you will attend if accepted. This will increase your chances much more, as Michigan wants to maximize its yield.
@fatboi99 my counselor said the same thing. My GPA is around yours but apparently the kids that got accepted mostly had 3.9+
Hi, i have legacy at michigan. My brother goes there and my deferred letter mentioned that. Did anyone else who has family at U of M get the more personalized deferral letter?
@nasoth I think your counselor was nicely telling you that you simply didn’t have the GPA that they consider to be competitive. I think she is laying the groundwork for a future rejection, nicely telling you that you can still try, but you should definitely put your efforts into other schools. Most people don’t get feedback like that so I think her honesty was refreshing. Even if it was hard to hear. Although it seems like you kind of knew it anyway. So try your best but start looking seriously at other colleges. Good luck to you!
Does anyone in the thread have zero updates on their portal? I have no “decision” button. All that changed was the “supplemental documents” section which has a new section called 7th semester grades
@desie1 are you referring to the email the regional officer sent me or the last post about my schools counselor? I knew my gpa was relatively low but people get in with 3.7s… I knew it was unlikely but I thought my act and my ecs might push me over the edge in RD. I’m in state and an urm so you never know. Thanks for your input though…?
^^dataengineer most likely you were deferred. At least in the past, the decision link only comes up if you are accepted or rejected since a deferral means no decision has been made.
@nasoth I was referring to the fact that you got a very personalized letter back from Michigan admissions stating that unfortunately your GPA was lower than what they wanted. Most students never get real feedback on their application. Therefore I think they considered you carefully and decided you didn’t perform well enough to be accepted. Of course you never know, and I hope you get accepted. I would try your best, but definitely move on to focusing on other schools.
Honestly, I agree that the reason why so many high stat students got deferred in EA is that Umich didn’t have enough time to read through all of the applications they received and had to finish them until February
@desie1 you seem to know what you’re talking about, do you think it would be beneficial to retake the act? I might be able to get it up one or two points. In the letter it says they have everything they need though.
@nasoth Don’t really know too much…LOL!.. but I’l PM you in a few minutes.
