Deferred U Mich Ann Arbor Class of 2021

When should we hear another decision after being deferred?

Last year first wave of decisions for deferred came in early Feb @JPGator98

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

@fatboi99 I got in with a 3.68 GPA. Don’t lose hope!

Hi folks,

Happy holidays to all of you. Out of state PA resident here recently deferred by the CoE. Do you guys think it’s worth sticking it out for Mich? I was accepted by Purdue which is ~20k cheaper and ranked 7th for my major. Surely I won’t get any merit based scholarships since I’m not an incredible student by Michigan’s standard. Then again the Michigan prestige is highly attractive. What do you all think?

Personal Stats:
ACT: 33
SAT: 1400 (720M, 680RW)
WGPA: 4.13
Class Rank: 32/418
5 “Meaningful” Extracurriculars

Umichigan deferred nearly all international applicant.
I am a Chinese applicant and I have not seen anyone getting admitted as an international applicant.
My ACT is 32 (STEM 35) and GPA 4.0. Not a very good statistics but lots of peers around me who are much better than me also got deferred.
Anyway, hope everyone will get in finally!

So I typed my Letter of Continued Interest and I realized it was a bit longer than I intended. I finished it and the word count is at 460. Should I keep it how it is or shorten the letter?

@UofMichigan1999 Unless everything you said is ABSOLUTELY crucial, then definitely cut it. That’s like 2 pages double spaced. No one’s got time for that.

If you’d like me to look it over, send me a message. I was admitted last year.

@gobluemom what would be best to put on the letter? the reasons for wanting to go to Unviesrity of Michigan? Also, when is the “due date” for writing this letter. Thank you for your help.

@skyflower17 There is no due date. The sooner the better of course. I would say send it a day or two before the new year so that it reaches them as soon as they open after the holidays.

@skyflower17 I believe my daughter sent it mid January with her semester grades. It was very short, maybe three or four lines. She did have a story to share, as that semester she earned a 4.0 and was named a state scholar. She sent another letter in February after her team went to state, again very short. Just make sure you get a response from the counselor. She did not and we figured that out in March. She called the admission office directly and they were very helpful and kind. It did not seem out of the ordinary for them to field a call like that. This is why I really think a letter is helpful and almost expected. This is my opinion of course. My daughter got in the very last wave. She loves Michigan and is very happy.

@Tokyo_Moon Purdue Computer Science is an excellent program.

Hello! just found this thread. I was hoping someone could tell me a little about what the Letter of Continued Interest consists of exactly? More specifically: around how long should they be, what type of stuff should it contain, and should I email it to my regional rep or mail it to admissions? Thank for all the help!! Better of luck to us all the next time around.

@enginero I believe this was said earlier in the thread. Here it is:

"just start of with ‘Hi (name)’ and then write first few lines saying you were deferred and would like to show your continued interest in joining, next update them with any awards, achievements since you applied in EA as well as how you thing UofM is the best fit for you. In the end just say that you are very eager to join, and assure them you will enrol if accepted. Somehow try to keep it brief, the counselor will have many leters of interest, he prob wont read all of it if too long.

Also very important do not forget to put your UofM ID AND application number, very very important, he most probably will need it to identify you in the applications pool and flag you or put your letter of interest in it. Hope that helps."

I feel like this thread got buried so bump

Agreed^
And idk I’m not sure if this was already mentioned or not, but I just looked at last years deferral thread and looks like the first round of decisions (for deferred) came out February 5 @ 12am
(Which was a Friday)

Seems like they always did Friday…until this year at least. Things could be different. They’re expected to have 5k more apps than last time, so lets see how things go.

Hopefully the regular application pool is not as strong as proir years. I really want a bunch of us in the thread to get in!

Anyone get a reply like this after a short email?

“On behalf of our Director Erica Sanders and myself I thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan, please be assured that it will be noted in my evaluation of your application. The University received a record breaking 32,500 early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. Please submit your 1st semester senior year grades so they can be considered as we continue to assess your application, but other than that there is nothing further we need from you at this time. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so although I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, I would also encourage you to explore the other opportunities available to you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.”
