Hi,
I was so disheartened to be deferred by ND in the early notification process. ND was my number one choice. I'm a smart gal, from the south. I'm in the top 3.7% of my class. I'm an URM. I have good (but not great) SAT's. 9-AP's by the time of graduation. AP Scholar, NHS, award winner violinist........Lots of other good stuff.
Realizing I had been deferred, I have expected no word from ND. Today I got a big/thick envelope from the financial aid office with all sorts of forms to fill out? But I've been deferred? Why send this to me now?
I guess I am grasping at straws. The postage on the envelope posts that it cost $1.35 to send that package to me; so, ND can't be sending that to everyone who has been deferred, right? Or everyone who is in the pending status, right? It's just too much $ if one does the math.
I think I have over analyzed this. Opinions?

Hmmm...that's odd. I am sure they have already started reviewing regular decision applicants. Perhaps those deferred to the regular round are reviewed again and a decision is made? I hope so in your case. If I were you, I would call the admissions counselor who represents your area and ask the same question.

I actually do think they send those out to any individuals who were deferred/accepted. You pay how much for sending in your application, so I'm sure they can spare the $1.35.

Once academics, extracurriculars, recommendations etc. have been examined by the admissions board their is little more admissions personnel can do to differentiate EA applicants. So what do they do with the students who are strong yet are having difficulty competing amongst the pool? Well, they defer these students. It's not a bad sign and shows that ND is giving you a shot to compete against a potentially less competitive pool.

In the meantime ND has to do a bit of paperwork. This likely includes preparing financially for a potential acceptance/enrollment. Let's be honest. As much as ND is admitting a class based on academic merit, it also must identify students who have the ability to provide for their education financially. After all, it would be impossible to give every student admitted considerable financial aid. So, they are simply keeping up with their books and preparing for your (a potential) admittance.

So I should go ahead and fill out all this financial information? It seems a little bit like putting the cart before the horse, know what I mean? I have been accepted elsewhere, but have not received a big packet of financial inqueries BEFORE the acceptance notification. Seems odd to me, but I guess I'll fill out the info.
Thanks

Did you tell ND that you were applying for financial aid? If so, you need to fill out all the financial forms before the decision is made, so that they can put together a financial package for you as well, assuming you are accepted. Can you imagine the chaos if ND waited until they accepted kids in March to send the forms out, get them back, and make awards in time for kids to decide on May 1 where to go?

My D got the financial aid package today but she applied RD. So, I guess it goes out to all deferred and RD applicants who checked off that they would apply for financial aid because yes, the deadline is Feb 15th.

Yeah. I got the same package. At first I thought they reconsidered their decision for EA. How I wish that was the case! I got deferred as well, and I really want to go to Notre Dame. I think it's going to depend a lot on first semester grades, but we'll see. Best of luck to all those deferred.
