Deferred - Will a B (Q1) and A- (Q2) in AP English hurt, help, or neither?

So I was deferred and my counselor will be sending them my mid-year report next week. My schedule this semester hasn’t been too challenging besides AP English, which has been an upward battle. The first quarter was especially hard since it was heavy on literature; reading and deeply examining literature is not within my skill set at all, and that reflected when I got a B for the quarter. I’ve been pushing myself as hard as I can to get an A this quarter to try to make up for the B, but I’m unfortunately right on the verge of an A but still at an A-. We have one final project which, at full credit (I put a ton of effort into this so I think it might happen), would bring me to a 92.98% when the minimum for an A is 93.00% :frowning:

Am I completely overreacting here? Are these grades good or bad for AP English? I’ve had all A’s this semester otherwise, which were for Publications, Econ, and college Sociology. I’m just really nervous because I’m doing everything within my power to prove to them I’m worthy. In case they’re relevant, some of my basic info include 4.017 weighted GPA (this term should slightly bump it), 31 ACT (retaking next month), and next semester I’m taking AP Calc, AP Psych, Spanish 4, and Publications.

Thanks!

I have no idea how your school weights your classes for gba and how your quarter/semester grades calculate into your final grades for each course (like is a A- and A different) but in general all A’s is good (and even one B while obviously not preferable, isn’t really a deal breaker alone). I think A’s in harder classes like AP are seen as much more valuable since those are the hardest classes over regular. Give the Gpa info you’ve listed I have no clue if that’s competitive from your school, but it sounds like besides English your doing the best you can at the present which is what’s most important. A higher ACT is helpful, and is probably more important than a A in English so I would focus on what you can control from this point since it sounds like English is stuck where it is.

@Heisenbergyk Thanks for the response! We have a 4.0 scale for unweighted and 5.0 for weighted. My unweighted is ~3.86 (we only receive weighted GPA’s, I had to ask my counselor for my unweighted) and my class rank is 6/98.

I sure wish I had a better first semester schedule to send them; my second semester is all of my favorite subjects but my decision will obviously be made by the time that’s done.

I’m hoping to get my ACT up to even a 32. I got a 31 both times I took it so I hope I’m not just cursed. I have the SAT this Saturday for the first time and I feel pretty good about that.

Ah, that helps, looking at your unweighted gba you definitely are in the competitive range for NU (with different schools having completely different systems its really hard to tell from weighted gba), and if your 6th in your class now with a mostly strong upward 1st semester grades, then that should be good enough to show improvement for your decision. If your deferred you obviously have been borderline on mark for acceptance so it seems like your taking the right path by improving and hopefully raising test scores. I got stuck at a 31 initially too and managed to jump up 3 points so I really wouldn’t get discouraged, it depends how much your practice and how much you connect with the specific passages you get. Good luck!

@Heisenbergyk Ahhh thank you your post made me feel so much better! I feel like the SAT should treat me better since it has no science section, aka my worst ACT score both times (28, would’ve had a 32 composite if I got at least a 30). But I’m going to do as many ACT science practice tests as I can to try to get a method down.

Wow, crisis (?) avoided. I talked to my teacher after school and he is allowing me to write an extra credit essay over the weekend to give me the one extra point I need for a 93%. So happy!
