What is UNC's policy on deferring admission in order to take a gap year? I really think I'll burn out if I go directly from high school to college. Would I be able to attend UNC if I wanted to take a year of to do some volunteer work and traveling?

Don't know a whole lot about it but I get the sense more and more ppl do it and that colleges are cool with it. Some think it is a really good idea.

I suggest calling and having an honest talk.

You can definitely do it. One of my best friends here took a gap year to work with city year at Cleveland. I've known several people who are taking gap years or took them last year to do service or travel around Europe or South America. They'll send you an email a little bit after they accept you. I think you just have to let them know what you're doing. The one thing you aren't allowed to do is take classes somewhere else.

D has two friends that deferred their UNC admission; one did service work in South America, the other did Americorp. Both girls feel it was the best decision as they were burned out from their competative high school. Both are now first year students at UNC and feel the year of service re-energized them for school and gave them a better sense of purpose. Cloying makes a good point about not enrolling in another college, too.

You have to let them know by July if you decide to defer. They told us you need to tell them what you are doing for the year and have it approved. For travel or volunteer service there should be no problem. They don't want you taking any credit courses at other institutions and I guess don't want you lying around doing nothing. As long as it is worthwhile they are cool with it.

its city year, americorps, or volunteering at south america good? how does one volunteer and do service abroad?

I need some good info, please
