Deferred by UNC until March 21; I'm OOS. Need to send in first semester grades which aren't a problem; continued 4.0/straight A grades through HS, incl AP Calculus AB and AP American History; taking 2 more AP's in second semester.

So does anyone have any insight into the UNC acceptance trends for those that were deferred? Taking into acct the above that A avg was maintained, didn't tank etc. Also busy starting on basketball team, doing internship, working part-time, still involved on NHS board, etc.

Would letting them know I've been accepted by US Naval Academy, Villanova, U Maryland Honors help or might UNC think....."well, you already have a choice of those schools, so you should be happy; we'll deny you on 3/21." Or would those acceptance raise their interest perhaps?

Any insight into UNC's deferred thinkign process is appreciated

Also deferred. I was wondering should I send them a letter telling them the new activities I’ve been participating in or not?
I’ve read somewhere also that I should call and ask why I am being deferred. Is that a good idea?

I’m deferred too. I applied for the Thomas Wolfe scholarship, which isn’t decided until February, so I’m wondering if they’re waiting for that decision…what should I do now?

I was deferred too-
In the decision letter it said specifically that they didn’t another recommendation letter. They made it seem like all they wanted were the self-reported 1st semester grades, but I’m worried that they actually expect us to send stuff.

jomass: for you it seems that they may have deferred you with a straight 4.0 UW GPA because they may have thought you were using them as a backup to Ivies possibly?? IF UNC is at the top of your list, I would at least let them know somehow…

Rodney…thanks for the feedback. I’ve seen that possible line of reasoning elsewhere and in my case it’s not true; didn’t apply to any Ivies. I would hate to think a school as good as UNC would assume they’re a safety school and read into someone’s app so much that they defer/decline them. (A third tier school perhaps so). Will definitely send them my fall grades with urgency.

^^I wasn’t really thinking safety…more like in line, but if they thought Ivy was in your future, especially OOS, you never know…send them your fall grades, but more importantly, make sure you either send a letter to your admissions rep or have your GC contact them to let them know that you really would attend if accepted.

Deferred as well. 4.0 with a 33 on the ACT. Made great mid-term grades. Would sending an updated resume help? I know that when I applied I didn’t have positions/awards that I have now.

yeah, i’m basically the same as anish10 (1450 sat, 4.0, good midterm grades), deferred.

i have the same question as that user as well: i have held a part time job since september (i submitted my application literally a week before i got the job), and have recently been named a captain on a varsity team. also, i am pretty sure i may have moved up in my class rankings (a spot or two- but moving from 10 to top 5). do you think i should get my guidance counselor to send that information in? i know they don’t want additional letters, but i feel like that would be more like a additional resume than a letter. also- chapel hill is my first choice. if i get in, i’m going. should i ask her to include that information as well??

For those who are deferred here are the next steps, with one BIG caveat:

If UNC is truly **your first choice school **then follow these steps; if you are still not sure or are “collecting skins” (seeing how many admits you can get) then please let the cards fall where they may because you are potentially taking a spot from someone who really wants to attend UNC.

For those who clearly have UNC as their first choice school make sure that admissions knows that. Have your college counselor contact your regional admissions rep and let them know that **IF admitted you WILL attend **…yield is still important to UNC.

One more thing, if your attendance is conditioned by potential merit awards i.e. if you get enough $$ you will attend, again let the cards fall where they may. Guaranteed yield is unconditional and merit money while better at UNC than most, still has its limits…

There have been other examples through the years of OOS candidates with resumes as strong as a 4.0 UW GPA and 1600 (old score) SATs who were rejected or deferred. In one case that I remember from about 4 years ago, UNC was clearly his first choice school and the guy was shocked when he was deferred. After both he and his college counselor spoke with UNC admissions it was in fact learned that they assumed that UNC was either a safety or that they thought that there was little chance that he would matriculate so they chose not to offer the admit and deferred him. After he and the counselor cleared things up he was offered admission in the spring and I believe is a senior at UNC now.

Make sure you update them with any and all new information such as awards, recognition etc that were not included in the original application. There is no need to tell them what other schools have admitted you- that information is irrelevant to them.

Stay in touch with your regional rep with occasional emails…demonstrate your interest and intent but DON"T overwhelm them; they are in the midst of RD admissions and you don’t want to become a nuisance.

Lastly, keep working hard, keep your grades up and stay positive.

I agree with the sending a letter part, however, which address and/or admission rep am I sending to? Should I send it to unchelp@admissions.unc.edu
And should I just send a thank you note, with additional info/awards/activities or should my guidance counselor be involved in this as well?

i would get your guidance counselor to send it, just to make it more official. but that’s just me.

also- how can we find out who our regional admissions rep is?? i can’t seem to find it on the website. thanks so much to everyone on this thread, espeically the AWESOME information by eadad.

Your college counselor will know who the regional rep is. Let them make first contact if they are willing to; if not get the name and email address from them if they will give it.

Again…DO NOT BOMBARD the regional rep with info and emails or you will torpedo any chance you had,

I was just reading your post about getting deferred to UNC and I was wondering if you could give me any information about emailing my regional admissions representative. I would like to send them an email regarding my application and I can’t seem to find my representative. Thanks!!!
