I just got my letter from BU and I was deffered sadly. I though I atleast had a 60% percent shot of getting accepted but I guess not. What are the chances for me getting accepted RD?

I think I had good reccomendations and pretty good essays too
What went wrong???
Who else got deffered?

I got deferred as well. I called the office to make sure (since they don’t directly say the word “deferred”, he confirmed it).

It was probably your SAT score. Even though that you’ve indicated that BU is your first choice by applying ED, they typically want people with higher stats, especially SAT scores. I’m assuming that they would want to increase their ranking on the multiple college ranking websites that sadly exist. You still have a shot for RD! Good luck!

That’s true.
Thanks.

I got deferred as well

Same I got deferred I thought I would get in BU due to stats. However, one of my parent’s friends who works at UCLA admission. He even told me that I have chance to get in UCLA. He told me they deferred me because they knew that I couldn’t afford the education, due to my family’s low income and they could not force me to go if they do not offer enough aids. So, they think that I would reject them, so they would lose the spot. So, they put me RD program. So I would not forced to go there. However, it doesnt mean that I got in. And BU is not my first choice but it was my first realistic choice. And I surfed though internet, most of the people are rich and got in.

^ i don’t agree with that last part…
i got accepted to CAS and coming from a family of 4 with a total household income of less than $48k, we have $0 saved up for college, and money is already extremely tight in our household.

my stats weren’t even that great… 1930 SAT and 32 ACT.
yet i still got accepted, with the presidential scholarship ($20k/year) and a grant worth $26.4k/year…

my point being… i think BU’s system of “who to accept and who to defer” is completely confusing and i don’t think it’s based on a set criteria.

BU has no idea of your financial status until they make your decision. I also come from a family of four with low income and they gave me 33k in need-based grants and 7k in loans. My stats weren’t great at all, either (28 ACT and 3.58 UW GPA). The thing about BU is they don’t only look at stats; they look for a student who is very well-rounded.

I agree that the way they admit people seems very confusing because I look at some who have lower grades than me who got in and wonder what went wrong with me. I guess its just something I will never be able to figure out. Do you guys know what the chances are of getting in after defferal into the college of general studies?

i agree with jkavon… t’s not only about stats. it has to do with everything, including your extracurriculars, leadership positions you may have had, how rigorous your schedule is, any difficulties you’ve overcome (and how well you’ve handled them), and ESPECIALLY your essays.
essays play a HUGE part in the admissions process, as it shows them how well you are able to express your thoughts in a coherent manner.

hopefulbustudent; do you think you’d be able to re-take your SATs again? your SAT probably hurt your chances a lot (BU’s average SAT score is 2010, taken from last year’s freshman class)
OR if you can’t retake your SAT, maybe consider not sending that score? only send your ACT, because a 27 is equivalent to an 1820 SAT score.

I am retaking my SAT because I know my score was much lower than what it should be to get into the school. So hopefully that will boost my chances.

question to @masking and @jkavon, hope this isn’t too silly or anything- you don’t apply for grants, right? they are just given to you?
and it’s the same with loans, right?

Well, I am sure I need more than you guys… And, it doesn’t matter to me because I am going to Johns Hopkins. I guess I am glad that I didn’t get in bu’s ed program. I got full ride too.

@hopefulbustudent, well you never know! you might get in RD! I mean my stats are worse than yours. And my personal statement got me to go to Johns Hopkins.

@maskingtaped, I said most… And well, congrats! Maybe your stats are much better than mine. So congrats… I don’t really care anymore because I am going to Johns Hopkins! Sorry I am not trying to brag but I am so happy, like I forgot about bu thingy!

@maskingtaped, you realized that you had to pay About 10 thousands… And my father earns much less than 10 thousands that’s why I couldn’t afford it. Lol before I find out about Johns Hopkins thingy, I called them and they said like we couldn’t give you enough aids. You guy could call if you want to know why. However it would lessen your chance? I guess. That’s what people told me but I was stubborn. Lol

@hopefulbustudent, well you should have apply for early decision for other schools and bu like I did with Johns Hopkins and bu.

^^^You are only allowed to apply to one school ED.

leahhhgreyyy; i’m kind of confused, lol.
i said what i did as a response to your
“He told me they deferred me because they knew that I couldn’t afford the education, due to my family’s low income”
and when you said,
“I surfed though internet, most of the people are rich and got in.”

i don’t know anyone (so far) that’s gotten in due to being rich.
BU is need-blind, therefore they don’t know how much money your family makes until AFTER they make the decision on whether or not you’ve been accepted.

my family can’t afford to pay for ANY of my college education… student loans, here we come!

but congrats on JHU!
