Don't be so sure about transferring into Michigan anymore even with a 3.8-3.9. My niece had a 3.9 cummulative gpa at State after her sophomore year and was still denied admission into LSA.

eh i wouldn't put too much of a dismal review on transferring... I am a soph at WMU right now and was accepted to umich for transfer in october. I got my app in on 9/2/08 and heard back 10/12/08 - 27 act - 3.3 HS gpa- but i had a bunch of EC's with leaderships in all of them - 3.92 frosh gpa - and they never asked for my midterms - i just can't get more then 3 C's.... but pull the grades and you'll get in.

A 3.8+ GPA from MSU should be good enough to transfer into Michigan. There are no guarantees of course, but the odds are good.

do they still look at your ACT score when you transfer?

novi (that's really disappointing I'm sorry that happened to your niece), snowrider, and Alexandre thanks for the input, I'm just going to apply and give it a try I know it's not a guarantee but I'm going to apply for Fall '09 and see what happens

I also believe that it matters what program you are looking to enter. The more popular majors might be more difficult to transfer into.

they don't take any consideration into your major. obv you cannot transfer into the business school - but it all depends on the school - LSA, Eng, etc. not the major... but i think they look at you ACT a little i think - depends on your grade when applying - if you are a frosh they will weigh hs and tests more then soph and even less if you are a junior.

what is an actual deferral?
like i got a letter asking for my grades too, but there wasnt any mention of "defer" or "deferral" in the letter
and nothing on my wolverine access has changed...
nor have i gotten an emial...

its when your admissions decision is defered to a later time period. so if you got a letter saying they want more grades and will get back to you later, then you got defered

yeah i applied well in time for early response, and the letter said something about mid-april. this so ******* annoying!
why must they be so coy about everything? this school is so confusing. if its a defer then say DEFER!

do they ask for all deferrals grades? or just some?

lightening...that's def a deferral if they say to wait until mid-april because that is when they release regular decisions...

blackpen: never heard of a 3.5/33 deferral? Look at last year's threads around this time....how about 3.8/1400 deferrals? or 3.7/32? I think that Alexandre's post says it best. Even though UMich only considers 10 academic grades for their UMGPA, they weigh those 10 grades significantly and a mere A- v. a B+ in one or two classes can change that UMGPA and make an acceptance a deferral (and ultimately a waitlist and a rejection). Does anyone know how easy it is to make an A- a B+? It could be as little as 4 points on a midterm or final...especially if your school doesn't round 89.6 upwards....

This is the reason that many, many students are not accepted to Umich but end up accepted to other top 20 schools.....

^ yeah i am thinking thats whats messing with me. I got that one b at the end of junior year in ap lang. GOt all A's in the rest of my classes l with 7 ap's at the end of junior year, but now i am getting scared.

I think my UM GPA is now about 3.88 uw and sat of 2250. Still have not heard back from mich and i wuld not be surprised if its a rejection. I am expecting a rejection right now.

i had like a 3.6 uw. sat 2240. and act 32. and got in...
trickstylez...don't be so pessimistic.

trickstylez, a rejection is very unlikely. and i doubt one B will affect your decision, especially with that SAT score and course load. i remember chancing you, and you said you submitted like a day before the ER deadline. that's likely why they're taking awhile

You will see that many applicants who applied in September and early October get in with the same statistics that later yield a deferral or waitlist. Michigan admissions is rolling, it is not truly ER or RD. At my kids' high school which is basically an in state feeder school, they tell the UMich applicants to have everything in by October 1. The earlier the better. Even now, if any of you are waiting to apply at the "RD" deadline, don't wait. The applications received that late do not get equal consideration like at other non rolling admissions schools. I know this is said over and over on this board, but not everyone seems to get how important it is.

when did everyone apply?
i sent my app on 10/28 and my transcripts and counselor rec was recieved 11/17
anyone know when i should get a decision?

I received a letter in the mail the other day, about my lack of a second year of foreign language.

"Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we find that we will need additional information in order to make a decision.

Please provide an explanation detailing any special circumstances for not fulfilling the two-year Foreign Language requirement for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

We appreciate your interest in the University of Michigan, and look forward to receiving the information requested. We will notify you of a final decision on your application be mid-April. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or to have your high school counselor call me, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your application. . . . . . rabble rabble"

I have since fulfilled what they asked for, and all materials are listed as received on wolverine access. So is this a deferral, and do I not qualify for early response anymore?

Just say defer if you mean defer.

i guess this would be considered a deferral as they said April.
umich is pretty strict about the language requirement (for some weird reason) so unless you have a great reason (english is your second language or something like that) then you unfortunately will probably be rejected.
i don't know why mich is so stringent about something like that, but that is just the way it is...sorry.

Wow... I have similar stats, and this kinda makes me nervous, but at least they told you. My stuff was in the 2nd week of August, and I still haven't heard anything.
