Wow, just got deferred via mail, nothing on Wolverine Access, am not too happy. Anyways, what are my chances now? Are they improved over someone just applying Regular Decision? Are they worse?

Anyone else in the same boat?

Anyone else in the same boat?

: [

deffered is o.k.
at least you weren't waitlisted.
if you post your stats, we can give you some insight.

Yeah, post your stats.

It could really go either way. If you were a borderline candidate that just missed admittance then it can end up going in your favor. When they evaluate your app again, you'll have the edge over a lot of people with similar stats because you applied early. Then again, there must have been a reason why you were deferred in the first place, and they might remember that reason when they review you again.

It's really hard to know.

^yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. I thought I had a pretty good chance, am not sure what to think now. I do not really want to wait 5 more months for a response though.

my stats:
Applied to LSA
[ *] SAT IIs :700 USH

You still have a pretty good chance for RD. I'm surprised you got deferred though. If you came from my school (in Michigan), you would have almost certainly gotten in.

^Perhaps, who knows. They requested my semester grades, and maybe that will help

Yeah if your senior year grades are good definitely send them in.

Ekostik, you don't choose to send in grades. They don't look at senior year grades when they're making your decision. They only check once you've been accepted to make sure your grades haven't taken a significant dip.

If you are deferred, then they do look at your senior year grades. They usually will look at any new information to help make the decision.

Not when you are deferred, like Michart said.

Omegared even said they requested to see the semester grades...

a 3.5 GPA and a 33 ACT, and you got deferred?

that doesn't seem right....

i thought a 3.5 and a 30+ ACT was an almost-definite chance of getting in as long as you apply before the end of november

Im not too suprised actually, probably a very competitive class

If its any consolation, I have a UW 3.5 with 8 AP classes, 2320 SAT, good ECS (section editor school paper, two 4 year varsity sports, etc.), national merit semifinalist, everything in by Oct. 7, and am instate. I haven't heard back, and I honestly don't think I will get in. I think the GPA is just the most important consideration for them, and they want 3.7+

^I would be extremely surprised if you didn't get in. Good things take a long time :)!

Please let me know when you do find out

Wow omegared that is really disappointing to hear, you definitely deserve to be at UMich as much as the majority who have been accepted so far.... I feel your pain though I was in a similar situation last year, my friend and I were deferred last year as well after applying ER, I had a 29 ACT, 2050 SAT, and about a 3.8 UW GPA, and my friend had a 31 ACT/3.7 GPA UW, what ended up happening to me is I got waitlisted in April after being deferred in November/Dec and then extended waitlisted in June and I got rejected late July, my friend also got waitlisted April/rejected in June

Hopefully you have better luck than both of us, you definitely deserve to be at UMich but people always gets screwed over every year......I really hope you end up getting in though

I guess maybe it is because I am not from Michigan, but I find the entitlement culture in the state damaging to both students and the university. Somehow, in-staters assume that just because they are very good students, they MUST be admitted. That's not the case anymore. And it is going to get a lot worse over time. A 3.5 GPA won't cut it. Close to 90% of admitted students have 3.6+ GPAs. The average GPA of admitted students is 3.85. The mid 50% ACT range of admitted students is 28-32. The mid 50% SAT range of admitted students is 1920-2180. Yes, the OP's ACT is around the 80th %ile of admitted students, but his GPA is around the 10th %ile and as we all know, Michigan places a lot more weight on GPA than on test scores. In fact, Michigan does not really differentiate between a 30 and a 36 on the ACT or a 2000 and a 2400 on the SAT, but they really differentiate between a 3.5 and a 3.7 or between a 3.7 and a 3.9 GPA. Over the last decade, Michigan's admission rate has dropped from over 60% to roughly 40%. In the next decade, I expect the admissions rate to drop further, perhaps all the way down to 30% or so. Michigan is actually doing a great job of keeping Michigan within reach for qualified applicants. Most of its peers are admitting between 10% and 25% of their applicants.

This said, I think the OP has a decent shot as a RD applicant, particularly because he submitted his application early. But the days where a student with sub 3.6 GPA and/or sub 1950/28 SAT/ACT scores are admitted with any frequency are comming to an end. I am sure that hundreds such students are admitted annually, but for each one that is admitted, 9 will be turned down.

i say you have a great shot to get for rd... wow this year must be tough for applicants. i've never heard of a 3.5/33 getting deffered.

^Thanks for sharing your experience ramen, where did you end up going?
^Alexandre, I asked you for help before, thanks again for your insight.
I am just going to wait it out, would be awesome if I got in since it is one of my very top choices, but I'm spreading the applications out, and hoping for the best.

Yeah Alexandre I agree, I realized that there were probably a thousand students with similar stats as what I had if not better, I mean a 29/2050/3.8 is average at Michigan and might be below average after this year's competitive class. Michigan is getting much harder to get into and they have 25,000 qualified students gunning for 5,000 spots, someone has to be disappointed at the end of the day.

Omegared I ended up going to Michigan State for my freshman year, the first semester is about over and I have a 3.8-3.9 GPA I'm thinking about transferring to UMich, UNC, USC and a few other schools.

I'm sure with your 33 ACT, if you put in a year somewhere else and get a 3.8+ GPA you will get into UMich or whatever school you would like to get into.
