Defferred from University of Michigan. Do I have a chance?

What are my chances of getting into the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor after being deffered?
I'm a senior at Cinco Ranch High School which is ranked about 400 nationally as a public high school applying for college.
I have a pretty bad GPA, about 3.27 weighted. mainly ap and honors classes

will be taking like 6 more by end of senior year

I wanna get into an engineering program.

I am out of state(i live in texas)

My 7th semester grades were pretty bad, mostly C's and B's but it was cause i took too many AP classes. after the 2nd 6 weeks i dropped AP stats and all my grades went up at least 10 points to all high B's and mid b's.

as a senior i'm taking AP psychology, AP enviormental science, AP calculus AB, PreAp Chinese III, AP government, AP economics, and some other AP classes (some are half semester which is why theres so many)

also in my school (its competitive) a 70% is a D and a 75% is a C. B and A are 80% and 90% respectively so their normal. its ranked about 400 in the country

You do have chances.

UMich deffered most applicants from EA for unknown reasons; some speculate that they had server problems and lost the decisions they had already made.

Your GPA is the only concern; you should have a fair shot after a new review of your application. What’s your class rank?

o wow really? i didnt hear about this. where r they saying this? thanks for the info!

Check out the U-M sub-forum here on CC. Lots of activity going on there.

i’m ranked like 420 out of 690. yeah i know its really bad. alot of people took like cooking and academic classes and I only took the AP and honors classes.

bump bump bump

Historically they’ve emphasized unweighted GPA very heavily, and obviously that’s not your strong suit—3.27 weighted with mostly AP and Honors classes must mean < 3.0 unweighted, right? But the fact that they haven’t rejected you is positive, probably a reflection of the strength of the rest of your application package. Michigan engineering is very competitive, more so than the overall stats for the school. Keep your head up. There’s a chance.

I think more likely they were so inundated with apps after switching over to the Common App that they decided they couldn’t rely on their old stats/admissions/yield models, and deferred a bunch of people to get a better read on who the real competition would be.

Stunash, with the switch to the common app Michigan has seen a 18-20% jump in the number of applications this year. The feeling around campus is that the high number of deferreds is related to this increase, i.e., Admissions sent out deferrals in order to buy themselves some time to more fully review all the applications. I have not heard of any server issues.

The link below shows that the average unweighted GPA for Michigan Engineering freshman is 3.9, my guess is yours is around 2.8. The average ACT is 31, so your 32 helps. Your rank of 490 out of 620 is just a killer. Explaining that your low GPA is due to a heavy Honors/AP course-load only hurts your case. College isn’t easier than high school AP, it’s harder. It’s true that deferred is not denied, but without some extenuating circumstances it’s difficult for me to be optimistic about your chances.

thx for the link. it helped alot. my schools is ranked about 400 and its pretty competitive but i figure most of the people on here go to competitive schools anyway. still do you think that’ll matter?

also anymore advice from anyone else?

about 3.27 weighted

What is your unweighted GPA?

where else did you apply? Do you have a safety school that you know that you can get in and can afford?

Is money no object? Will your parents pay for wherever you get in?

my unweighted is like a 2.9. I’ve been accepted into Baylor Honors engineering, as well as A&m engineering. teir civil engineering is like rank 10 and michigan is like rank 9 so ranking wise its not a far jump, i just want the solid overall education that a&m seems to lack.

also money is not an issue.

…

Before the common app, UMich would only in rare circumstances (or from certain schools) accept anyone with a GPA below 3.5 unweighted.

They have more applicants this year, and many of them are probably highly qualified.

Thus, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be accepted based on your GPA and class rank. Further, they want to see that you succeeded at a rigorous curriculum, not just that you’ve attempted one.

Your ACT and your ECs will help, but I would advise against getting your hopes up.

I heard that they wont be recalculating weighted and unweighted anymore. do you think this will help me

They won’t be recalculating them, but they’ll still most likely be using similar standards. I doubt it will make much of a difference.
