Degraff hall

So I know for certain I'm in Degraff hall, and I've heard it's nice compared to some other halls. What I am concerned about is the location. What exactly is the underground tunnel that everyone's warning me about, and what other ways can I take to get to Degraff?

It’s nicknamed the “rape tunnel” because of its appearance, but housing has placed so many security cameras in there that they refer to it as the safe tunnel. You can opt to cross Tennessee Street without it, but it’s unnecessary. You hear of no more incidents in the tunnel than anywhere else.

Degraff is identical to Wildwood, and is the newest residence hall on campus for freshmen. It’s definitely one of the nicer halls on campus, and also has wi-fi. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

My friend was an RA there last year. She told me that the hall had the police come out there many more times compared to the other halls. Also, someone was robbed in the parking lot there with by three men with a shotgun. The other way to get to Degraff besides the rape tunnel is taking Dewey street.

However, my other friend whom have lived there, tells me that it’s the best building to survive a zombie apocalypse.

There is always a bright side to every picture. =)

Probably the best crime report from Degraff this year was the guy going around with a shotgun and a doorag on his face. He kindly asked for a few students belongings in the Degraff parking lot, then went on his merry way! : )

I’d definitely be more scared of the parking lot than the tunnel. If you have a car, put it in one of the garages.

Wow… I feel great now.

If it makes you feel any better, the shotgun was probably in safety mode when he asked them for their belongings.

@sid, hahaha

Everyone loves to hate on Degraff (particularly the people who have never lived there), but don’t listen to them! I lived there the past two years and loved it. Not only is it very conveniently located (from what other dorm can you walk to the union/HCB in under two minutes?!), but it’s pretty new so all the rooms are pretty large for a dorm and nice.

Yes, there’s been some incidents, but honestly, if you’re walking alone around Tallahassee at 3am, you’re asking for trouble. I’ve never had any incidents, and if you need to get back to the dorm late at night you can just have the SAFE bus drive you and then you won’t have to walk through the tunnel or cross Tennessee.

Trust me, you’re going to love Degraff.

Degraff will be great. If you research the FSU crime stats online, there has not been an incident in the tunnel in well over a year. There have been parking lot incidents, all after midnight.

You can call the SAFE program if you are out late at night, and have them meet you in the parking lot if you have to leave or return after dark. They will even escort you to and from your car. Call 644-SAFE for the safe escort program. They have walking escorts until midnight and van escorts until 3am. You can call for an escort from any blue light station. If you are going out at night, you can use the Night Nole bus.

Generally, the incidents are when students are alone and not in a group, are late at night when students have been drinking or are in a hurry and have forgotten how to be safe.

You can cross Tennessee At Dewey and not use the tunnel. You can park in one of the garages and call for a SAFE escort back to the dorm. (they drive you in a van). DeGraff is newer and a very nice dorm. It is close to the Union, and close to all the businesses on Tennessee.

youll be fine in degraff, dont listen to these ninnys!

Are the doubles in degraff small or are they pretty roomy… or are triples better?

I have the same question for landis also

I don’t think there are triples in Degraff. It was built as suite style rooms, and therefore the rooms are all pretty similar. Landis was a community style residence hall (built in the 1930s) and was renovated to suite style a few years ago, (I think it was 2006). That’s why there are some triples and quad rooms. They had to fit rooms and bathrooms into the existing floor plan. They made larger rooms where they had extra space. There are all different shapes and size rooms, with weird soffits, corners and columns. Some triples are large, but I have seen some that were barely bigger than the doubles. There is supposed to be a closet for each bed, that’s how you will know if it was built to be a triple. The internet and TV connections are in locations that make no sense. The cable outlet is near the refrigerator outlet, so if your room has a closet wall near the door (as the triples tend to have), you might not be able to see the TV from your bed. Extra coax cable would be a good idea. For your computer you may need a long ethernet cord to go around the perimeter of the room in case your bed isn’t near the lone (multi) connection that all rooommates share. You might also need some 3M Command clips to attach the cords to the baseboard.

As a resident of DeGraff hall, you’ll have a blast. As an RA for DeGraff hall, you want to kill yourself.

Thanks nolette so the best decision would be to stick with the double for landis

Is your assignment in Landis or Degraff for summer and/or fall/spring?

Landis is more central. I would suggest that, if you have a spot in Landis, you keep it.

I’m living in landis for the summer and degraff for fall but I have a double for both but i’m starting to rethink if getting a triple is better because it’ll be more social but what i’m worried about is the space for the triple

Keep in mind that with a triple, there’s an increased likelihood of not getting along with your roommates. At least in a double you only have to put up with 1 other person.

The dorms are going to be as social as you make them.

Yeah i think people neglect to realize that how social a dorm is can mostly depend on how social they are.
