i have recently been accepted to FSU and it is one of my top schools. i just have a couple of questions for anyone who can answer them realistically.
1) ive heard many things about Degraff, so is the tunnel really dangerous? is it a freshman party dorm? and is suite style housing in general not a good idea for people who are trying to make many new friends?
2)question to anyone who has lived in both community and suite style: which is better? i understand that suite style is less conducive to meeting new people but is it really that difficult??
3) on my housing app i put degraff, wildwood, bryan, gilchrist (in that order) as my priority. thoughts??

I’ll try to answer your questions as best as I can.

1) The tunnel has the nickname “the rape tunnel”, but honestly, it’s nothing to be afraid of. There’s a safety bluelight in the middle in case something DID happen, but the only incident was that a girl got her iphone stolen in there. If you’re not walking by yourself at night, you have nothing to worry about. The only thing is that it doesn’t have the greatest location… it’s right by the union, but if you have enc1101 or other freshmen classes, you may have to walk a little further as opposed to if you were in one of the east side dorms. But degraff is right by a bunch of bars and clubs if you are into that. My best friend lives there this year, and my brother lived there last year. It definitely seems like a party dorm, but I’m sure many dorms are like that. There are many people there that do party, and many that don’t. You’ll find that anymore, so I wouldn’t worry about that. My main concern about degraff is the location lol. And the suitestyle really isn’t that bad. There are SO many socials and get togethers the first week of school in each hall. If you attend those, you will meet so many people. You also have your roommate and suitemates. I noticed that everyone I met was eager to make new friends. You won’t be the only one. No matter what dorm you end up in, you will make plenty of great friends.

I haven’t lived in community-style before so I can’t really answer this… but my friend lives in Smith and says she’s met people in the bathroom to hang out with, which is cool. If you are willing to put yourself out there to make new friends in any dorm you’re in, though, you WILL meet people. Not just in community-style.

To be honest, everyone thinks that degraff and wildwood are the best because they are the newest. And they really are REALLY nice. But I have close friends living in both, and they ALWAYS end up hanging out with me and my friends in bryan. The location is just great. My degraff friend has met a lot of people there, but my wildwood friend says a lot of people in her building are really stuck up and just hang out with high school friends. Idk. I live in bryan (so this might be biased) but I LOVE it here. It’s sooo awesome. The rooms aren’t the biggest (unless you get lucky) but it is the smallest dorm and, at the end of the first semester, I know just about everyone in the dorm. Or at least the people that put themselves out there and hang out in the lounge and stuff. It’s pretty awesome. That’s my favorite thing about bryan. It’s also right next to suwannee, which is super convienient. Also, are you honors? Gilchrist is supposedly the dorm for the “extra honors kids”. I’m not sure how that works out and if others can live there though. What’s your priority number? You may want to also look into Broward and Reynolds- they have great locations by suwannee and are by the areas where most of your freshman classes will be.

Hope this helped! Let me know if you have anymore questions and I will try to help. :)

wow thank you!!
so besides it being smaller and in a good location, is bryan dirty? old? ive only been to campus once so im trying to picture it, is it the one that surrounds suwannee (sp?) dining hall? the one with the really nice lady? haha i remember those to be really old from the outside, but is the inside renovated?
my priority number is in the 550s so i will most likely get my first or second choice and i have until may to change my mind without getting my priority number changed.
also online it says that with bryan you have to get a meal plan… that wasnt annoying was it?
im not honors sooo idk about the gilchrist thing lol

Haha no problem!
It’s old, actually the oldest dorm at fsu, but has been renevated, so it’s not dirty at all. I mean it’s not as nice as wildwood or degraff, but it’s very traditional looking. Yep, it’s RIGHT next to suwannee! It’s the one to the left. It looks like a castle from the outside, and everyone says it looks like hogwarts on the inside. Oh and yes suwannee has the veryvery nice lady haha! She is so awesome.
Yeah, you have a very good number. I got in during the regular decision so my priority number was in the 5000s. The only thing about bryan is that it’s a living learning community, so you have to sign up for a one-credit hour colloquiam that takes place on monday nights for the first semester only. Then you also get to take a class inside the dorm each semester (each class has 22 students) which is really cool. I personally like the dining hall foods, but I’m kind of a health freak, and they don’t have many healthy choices which is the only bad thing I’d say. But most freshmen who live on campus get the meal plan (either because they have to or they just want to) so it’s really not too bad.
Like I’ve heard gilchrist is for extra honors students, but I really don’t know if they accept any other students. They might. It doesn’t hurt to put it down as a priority, because chances are you’ll get one of your top four. :)

Oh and if possible, you should visit the campus and see if you can visit some of the dorms. I’d be more than happy to show you bryan. :)

^Hey I got housing priority number 2831(not the best) but I was wondering what do you think my chances would be for Reynolds? I applied for the Pre-Health living community.

Hey! I think that you have a great shot. I’m not really familiar with that living learning community, but I know with my llc, a lot of students got into it the last week of summer. As in Reynolds in general, I’d say yes. I know a girl from my high school that had an even higher priority number than me (I think it was in the 6000s) and lives in Reynolds rooming with another girl from my high school that she requested. Not a lot of students want to commit to no alcohol/drugs so Reynolds is usually one of the last dorms to fill up.

^okay thanks very much for the input, I was aliitle worried at first because most people on here was saying they got a priority number of 1000 or less. But you optimistic attitude changed my whole perspective! :)

Unfortunately, a lot of people tend to forget or ignore the fact that they signed such a contract. Almost everyone I know (12/13 of them) in Reynolds has violated it in one way or another by now.

Fsubound- Aww, haha I’m glad! I’m really sure that you will get in.

Dnerd- Yeah, I heard that too. I know that even one of the RA’s goes out drinking with some of the residents too… but also the idea of being in a contract makes some students want to reconsider living there.

hsmloverrx: which living learning community is bryan?? and does degraff have a mandatory living and learning class??

Bryan is a llc just for freshman. No specific major required. Degraff doesn’t, but I know that they do have some llc just on one floor that you can be apart of.

I lived in Gilchrist my first year and loved it. Prime location and connected to some other dorms through the hallways- good for dorm socials, increasing options during a vending machine raid, and avoiding the rain on the walk to suwanee. Ha, but really, being connected to the other dorms made it feel more like a community. Clean, well-kept, and overall warm feel. (Oh, and better water pressure than wildwood and degraff not to mention locks on the inside And outside of the bathroom ;)) Most of the kids in Gilchrist are not in honors. Gilchrist Used to be the honors dorm.

I wouldn’t rely on your dorm to make friends. Most people make friends through clubs/events/classes. In fact, that’s why I switched to single in Gilchrist halfway through the year. I was able to live on my own schedule and have people over whenever I wanted. Speaking of which, community style dorms have hour restrictions when it comes to opposite sex guests. Terribly annoying if you like to make friends of the opposite sex!! And yes, the night staff Do enforce it.

(By the way if anyone is interested in checking out some free belly dance classes taught by the FSU Bellydancers on campus feel free to pm for the link!)

You guys are totally right about abstaining from the drinking and smoking but I know I can do it. I’m going to school to get a higher education, not get drunk or high! Lol thanks for the informing info guys! :)

DeGraff is a nice dorm. I have a few friends who live there, and it’s not problem for them. They enjoy living there. The tunnel is safe. It’s well lit, and campus is consistently patrolled by FSUPD.

For drinking and smoking, I have one thing to say: it’s college. Enjoy yourself, just don’t be stupid. Academics come first, but you’re only in college for a short time in your life. Most people violate underage drinking policies as well as in-dorm violations. Smoking isn’t prevalent in my experience, but it does exist. It’s simply a matter of learning where you fit in. You’re going to find an atmosphere that suits you.

Most of the dorms aren’t bad. You can’t enter on-campus living and expect it to be like staying at the Ritz Carlton. It just won’t happen. Living in a dorm requires adjustment, and you will get used to it. All of the dorms are pretty nice and well kept. Some are better than others, but it’s all part of the college experience.

^ lol. I love how you inform but keep it real about known and unknown aspects of the college life. Thanks! :)

How bad is a priority number of 7350?

7350 out of how many?

My dd requested landis, gilchrist, broward, and reynolds in that order. Hoping to get into the honors program.

And is FSU a safe campus? I was a little scared off by the map listing the zillions of sex offenders around the campus and the crime rate in Tallahassee in general.

No one really knows because the priority numbers shot up faster than ever this year, which in my mind could indicate that many people signed up before deciding whether or not they were going here for sure (which means many of the 7350 will be declining their spot). I believe you will ultimately get a spot in housing, but will likely be wait listed at first. You will not end up in Landis and I think it’s highly unlikely you’ll end up in Gilchrist with that priority number, even if you’re in honors.

You should check out the community halls, Dorman/Deviney/Kellum/Smith, and make your selection for Gilchrist #1 and then your top three favorite community halls.

so. . .where do you think my daughter will end up?! She is #3558. She is admitted into the Honors Program, and put Landis and Gilchrist as the first two(forgot the others!)

Now, she is considering the Social Justice LLC @ Wildwood. Would she be happier at this dorm with this type of arrangement, or in the first two dorms mentioned? Does she even have a chance on getting into the honor’s dorms?

The housing dept. has a facebook page you can get there off the FSU housing homepage…you can ask questions about numbers there and someone from housing will answer…lot’s of people are asking which dorms to choose, etc and getting advice on which dorms to list.
