KochAndPepsi,
It’s been a year now and I wonder what you ended up doing? Did you to to VA Tech? I stumbled upon your thread because my daughter who I thought was a strong student has been denied to almost every school she applied to. She applied to 10 california schools (private & public). I must admit, most were a reach for her based on your GPA and SAT scores. To my surprise, even the Cal State schools were selective this year! She would be grateful if she had just one school that wanted her. She is waitlisted at UC Santa Cruz and her app is still pending at Cal State Northridge. Her dream school is Loyola Marymount University. I have to say, I can totally understand your frustration, shock, anger, etc! I too feel her GC was not very involved or thorough. In fact, I sought private help for her and I did most of the research myself. Where we failed was not applying to ENOUGH safety schools. We thought the Cal States would be safety, but with what just happened with the State budget, that was not true. Stupidly, she only applied to 2 Cal States in LA and none in our local area in N.Cal. The out of region Cal States used very high index scores to admit applicants that are out of area (Tier 2). She would have been grabbed at any given Cal State in N.Cal. She had her heart set on moving to LA and that was all we were thinking when she applied. What a learning experience and what a blow this has been.

Tell me how you moved forward and what you did. At the moment she’s appealing some decisions, but we know she’ll most likely end up re-applying for Spring 2013. In the meantime she is retaking her SAT’s and ACT and taking more rigorous coursework. She has developed some depression from this entire situation. Most of her friends have gotten into schools and they all talk about it.
