I was denied from UF.
UCF is my second option, but I was just so focused on UF that it’s a bit of a shock getting denied.
But now I have to start planning ahead, and I could really use some helpful insight.
–I was accepted for the summer term with a scholarship, and I’m currently planning on majoring in biochemistry. Maybe biomedical sciences or just biology. The goal is to reach medical school.
–I have not filed a housing application. When should I complete it? And which is the preferred dorm for freshman?
–How is the social aspect of UCF? The freshman population seems to be a very small percentage of the 60k+ students.
–Can I get in to Burnett Honors? I intend to apply. My stats are as follows:
SAT: 1300 (probably best if I don’t report this)
ACT:30
uw gpa: 3.33
w gpa: 4.38
taken 16 AP classes by the time I graduate hs.
top 25% of class (550)
hispanic male
plenty of leadership positions in clubs
most of volunteer hours come from volunteering at a rehab hospital
–Any good hospitals in the campus proximity that I can volunteer/work at?
–I have fl pre-paid, IS tuition, and bright futures FAS
Most importantly, am I making the right decision?
Virtually all of my friends have gotten in to UF, and those that didn’t are going to FSU. Am I correct when I say UCF is the better stem school? Or when I say that UCF is the #2 Florida school? It just seems like a big slap in the face to me, this whole process being rushed and not completely thought out. Orlando is a big city, and absolutely no one I know is attending UCF. It’s a new place, new people, new everything. At least it’s only two hours from home.
Any other advice would be helpful. I understand college is what you make of it, but UF was my #1. I had everything planned out. It’s a huge heartbreak, but life goes on. Thank you.
Also, are there any scholarships or programs that I should take notice of? I’ve heard of LEAD and other similar programs, just wondering what and which would benefit me the most.
In regards to STEM, I say UCF is for sure better then FSU. I suggest touring UCF is you havent already. I know people going to UCF even though they got into UF because of the campus and how much UCF has to offer. I also know there are multiple snapchat groups and group me’s for incoming UCF students and everyone seems really friendly so I wouldn’t really worried about making friends, there is of course tons of others going to college not knowing anyone. I know people with lower SAT and ACT then you and got into the honors college which of curse helps with medical school, as well as meeting friends. Not sure about the hospitals but I am sure theres one within 30 minutes that students volunteer at
Do deposit for housing quickly.
Hopefully someone can help you with the choice - if you get into Burnett then honors dorm (which is awesome). If not, absolutely pick a LLC. Or two.
Apply to Burnett - a very good honors college overflowing with top scholars (the NMF package is very good). The honors college offers perks that I’ll help you make the gigantic school feel a bit more personal and the priority registration will help with overcrowding. (There’s overcrowding at UF too.)
Of course you could see if there’s an appeal process for UF and if you meet the criteria. But don’t hope too much (4.3 is the bottom 25% there so it may explain the situation.)
Have you been admitted elsewhere? Gotten into the honors college elsewhere?
@MYOS1634 I have been admitted to FSU, alabama, and auburn. Waiting for miami, texas, unc and vandy but I could care less since I wont be admitted to those and even if I am, I will receive little to no financial aid. I toured UCF yesterday and I just wasn’t happy with what I saw. I couldn’t see myself staying there and now I’m considering FSU, but I have yet to tour their campus and the Honors application is due tomorrow.
Complete the Honors Application for FSU. FSU has been VERY selective this year so you’d be in good company and it’s worth trying for. If you get in you’ll have one more good choice.
UCF isn’t for everyone so it’s good you visited and determined it wasn’t a good fit.
Did you get into UAlabama Honors? If so, and you got full tuition, I’d seriously consider it if it’s affordable.
Auburn is likely to be more expensive than either UA or FSU though.
Do you mean UMiami in Florida or Miami (named after the Native American tribe that originates from there) in Ohio?

@MYOS1634 I have not applied to UAlabama Honors. I’m not sure if the Honors applications are binding towards the college, so that’s why I’m hesitant. It’s my fault I haven’t done enough research.
And I mean UMiami in FL.
OP: I am sorry that you are disappointed by the UF decision. Don’t be discouraged. UF is getting super tough regarding admissions because the tuition is remarkably low & the education & location are quite good.
@MYOS1634 what do you mean by my budget? By attending FSU I’ll have in state tuition, bright futures FAS and FL pre-paid. Unless you mean EFC, which in that case is $140,000+
@Publisher Thank you, I’m aware of how tough it’s getting, but life goes on. No need to dwell on the past besides learning from failure. I’m hoping for the best at FSU, if I go there (which at this point is highly probable)
