Question, excluding GaTech and CWR, if all of these schools were equal cost, which would you pick and why? My child still has three (non summer) visits to do and doesnāt yet have first choice. TU is next week, USC tomorrow.
@fallenchemist do you think that all of the awards have been mailed? Or could some still be waiting to be shipped?
@Chopinspiano
Most likely they have There is an outside chance there are one or two stragglers for weird reasons, but it seems like this year thy have decided to send all the DHS and PTA awards out at once. Sorry, I know that is a disappointment for you.
Congratulations to the winners!
Based on past experiences, is it possible to be awarded any kind of merit aid between now and the end of April (for already admitted students) if these 2 scholarships fall through?
Is your son considering any of the Ivies? Of if not, why not? Seems like the perfect candidate.
@SoProudofMyChildren
Congrats to @collaroyblue and @SoProudofMyChildren!! Collaroyblue, it seems like ages ago you showed me your fascinating project. So great that it was a winner!
For both of you, did the letter state how many were awarded for each this year? I am assuming 75 DHS and 50 PTA, but the one post that said 100 total made me wonder.
@SoProudofMyChildren
They all have fine BME programs, although I think Tulaneās is somewhat superior to Miamiās for various reasons. Tulaneās was one of the first in the country and is a bit more established in that regard, but mainly because Tulaneās is more interdisciplinary and is tied more directly to various entrepreneurial ventures. Just the general spirit of the program, besides having some really fine professors that I have met and am impressed with their work. But no question that the others also have some excellent people and resources. I think for UIUC and UMich, it is more of a matter of if the student is OK with the huge school versus the medium sized school, and college town locations (nothing wrong with that of course, just very different) versus NOLA. After cost of course. I imagine UMich OOS is very expensive. USC has a very fine BME program, choosing between that and Tulane, all else being equal, would be a tough call I think. If Tulane were a lot cheaper, then I would choose Tulane, and vice versa. But of course unless she wins a Stamps at USC, it is hard to see how USC could be less expensive.
@proudmom1106
Virtually every winner of these awards has the stats for the Ivies. Not everyone wants that. My D turned down 2 Ivies to attend Tulane. Yes, cost was a big factor, but she was not really all that enamored with the 4 she visited and really just applied to see what would happen and to leave her options open (my request) in case someone convinced her otherwise later. I thought she was right in her assessments with regard to her personal fit, but I never see any reason to close off options if the barriers to leaving them open are low.
@jupiter98
I am not clear about some things. Have you already been accepted to Tulane and received your acceptance letter? And if so are you saying there was no merit money in the letter?
@fallenchemist Do you know if the finalists for Stamps Scholarships have been notified yet? Also, are Global Scholarship notifications sent out with DHS and PTA?
Correct. Accepted with no merit money
@Dyllieman
I have not heard anyone actually say they have been contacted that they are a Stamps finalist, but the way the process works I donāt see how they could not have been. Since there are only 10 I believe, it could well be none are on CC. And otherwise I have no way of knowing, save for the coincidental conversation every now and then, but not in this case.
If any CC member is a Stamps finalist for Tulane, let us know!!
As far as the Global, I donāt know for sure but since that does require Skype interviews, it might come later. Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to remember them being awarded mid to late March last year, and probably not all at once.
D received her package today. Tulane is the only one of her four final schools that she hasnāt visited in person yet, though we are planning to correct that deficiency. She posts on CC and can post her own stats later, but this is her third full tuition offer, plus one full ride and waiting on one more scholarship competition weekend. She really likes the personal attention/touch she has gotten from Tulane throughout the process, which allowed her to definitely demonstrate interest from afar.
@jupiter98
Then the answer, unfortunately, is that there is virtually no chance of getting merit scholarships from Tulane.
Anyone from California receive a scholarship today?
Is there a reason they wait to send out the rejection emails? It seems like they would send them out at the same time as the awards, especially since they sent all the awards out together. It would be nice to have the definitive decision already so I donāt think about weird scenarios where Iām not actually rejected haha
Well, for one thing there are at least 20X more denials than winners. Then someone has to do the data entry that triggers the email. That might take a couple of days, and they probably donāt start on that until after the packages go out.
I just got dhs in the mail!! I am so beyond excited and surprised. I was on the lower end of the stats. So for any of you thinking you canāt get it, donāt doubt yourself!!
Award won: DHS
UW GPA: about 3.73 (school doesnāt calculate)
W GPA: 4.13
ACT score: 32
Were you interviewed by telephone by a Tulane designate?: No, wasnāt asked
Likelihood of Attending Tulane (%): 99%
ECs: Iām very involved with my youth group and church, good leadership
Comment:
I used small boxes to represent the problems dragging us down in our daily lives and to move on you have to face them and accept them.
@fallenchemist I asked you before if you thought I had a chance at it and you said it was low since of my stats, but to still try. Well I got it and I am beyond proud! I originally got the distinguished scholar award ($27k) and was not invited to the honors program. But with getting the dhs they now invited me to the honors program.
@grfeta15
Congratulations and thanks so much for your posting your stats. And yes, you definitely make me glad I encouraged you, as I did several others with similar stats. #-o Your project must have been really superior, and you should be proud. Your post will be a valuable contribution to those applying next year.
School will be fun tomorrow, wonāt it? I bet there are some teachers and classmates you cannot wait to tell. Well, with social media I guess your classmates already know!
Did your DHS letter say how many winners there were this year? Usually they have included that tidbit.
@fallenchemist it said 75 received it
Received the package for PTA today in IL! Iām really excitedāfull tuition at Tulane is definitely a big thing to consider.
Award won: PTA
UW GPA: school does not publish
W GPA: 5.0/4.0
SAT/ACT score: 34 ACT
Were you interviewed by telephone by a Tulane designate?: Yes, was invited to interview and had a pretty casual conversation with an alumnus.
Likelihood of Attending Tulane (%): I couldnāt even put a number on it right now. Still waiting to hear back on some acceptances and scholarship offers, but full tuition at Tulane is an extremely attractive option.
Comment: I knew I had the stats for PTA, but I wasnāt exactly sure how my essays were going to measure up. Guess they liked them! I intended to apply for DHS and didnāt end up doing it for lack of ideas/time, so Iām really happy to have received the PTA.
I donāt think the PTA letter I received said anything about how many people were awarded it.
