"I would like to congratulate you on your achievement of admission to the University of California, Santa Cruz. The Office of Admissions has told us that you proposed a major in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering (BSOE). We hope that you join us. I am writing today to give you a personal introduction to the BSOE and its programs.

The BSOE is proud to have renowned researchers and dedicated teachers on our faculty and to have been honored with national awards in many areas. The faculty and students at the BSOE are studying and providing innovative responses to the technological questions of today and of the future.

Our instructional laboratories provide students with state-of-the-art equipment, and small classes make an excellent environment for classroom study and independent research. Also, the campus' proximity to Silicon Valley and our close interaction with industries there create fantastic opportunities for internships and your future career.

I would like to draw your attention to our two newest undergraduate majors:

Bioengineering - The bioengineering B.S. program is distinguished by UC Santa Cruz's strengths in areas such as bioinformatics, molecular biology, and bioelectronics. Faculty in this program perform research in areas such as biomolecular sensors, nanoelectronic implants, assistive technologies for the elderly and disabled, bioinformatics, molecular design, and environmental monitoring.

Graduates of the program will be prepared to work as engineers solving problems in the biomedical and biomolecular domains and to pursue advanced degrees in engineering, medicine, or science.

Computer science: computer game design - The computer science: computer game design B.S. program, the first major of its kind in the UC system, instructs students in the technical, artistic, and narrative elements of computer game design. Students in this major will build a complete game as a capstone experience before graduating.

We invite you to visit both the campus and the School of Engineering. To reserve your place in the Spring Spotlight event for admitted students, go to admissions.ucsc.edu/springspotlight10. A tour of the BSOE facilities is also available at our BSOE Open House Tours. For more information and to reserve your space at one of the Open House Tours, please go to Undergraduate Open House Tours | Jack Baskin School of Engineering | UC Santa Cruz or call (831) 459-4744.

Please note that as a proposed major in the BSOE, you will be required to complete certain foundation courses before formally declaring your major. For more information on what it means to be a proposed major in the BSOE, please see ugrad.soe.ucsc.edu/admissions.

Again, I hope you will find the Jack Baskin School of Engineering and UC Santa Cruz will be the right choice for you, and I look forward to welcoming you this fall.

Sincerely,
