i really hope it comes by the start of may, since there are other colleges waiting

short and bitter: Unsuccessful.

Wow. You got yours back? I’m so sorry.

i too am sorry to hear danny. you previously mentioned you would be told of your decision online. is that how you found out? i’m surprised it came back so quickly.

it’s alright…thanks anyways guys.
i actually got it by mail today. It was quick. They received it on the 17th of March, so approximate your decision date based on my date.
Dude, the letter had the same excuse like the first one…" We are unable to accomodate so many at this time."
My appeal was flawless…i mean FLAWLESS…My principal even wrote a magnificent letter.
My appeal was on a personal situation that has happened to my family for over years.(political persecution). If that didn’t work, I don’t know how successful the appeals are going to be this year.
Nevertheless, I have my eyes on becoming a prospective University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student and am anxious and thrilled to attend there and bleed blue and white. GO TARHEELS!
Good luck to all and don’t be dissapointed…at least i’m not.

This almost makes me wish I took up my cousin’s offer to put in a good word for me if I committed to UF. I just wasn’t ready to do that.

what do you mean?

My cousin (that appealed and got in) used to work in the admissions office (in an intern style position) at UF and is now working for her PHD at another college. She still knows a few friends there, and offered to put in a good word for me, but only if I would say I would go if they overturned the decision, and I didn’t feel comfortable doing that. So now I’m just going to let the cards fall as they may, and most likely go to UCF.

danny_125: Why would you appeal if you weren’t ready to jump at the opportunity if they reversed their decision?

This question is actually for me, I assume. I feel that the UCF Burnett Honors college is also an excellent opportunity where I would have some smaller classes, get to sign up in advance for classes to ensure I get a spot in the ones I want, have a better dorm (with a full kitchen!), and also be in a more developed area of Florida. Face it, Gainesville is in the middle of nowhere outside of the college town. Still, I have feelings for UF and may still want to go there, so I appealed. Why not?

ahh i got mine back today too and got the same old excuse.. too many applicants. i think theyre just gonna reject everyone again and say that. i worked on my appeal weeks before i knew what the topic was so it was pretty much spotless. my other conclusion was that they are gonna reject students who they think would be unstable emotionally like if weve been through something traumatic so there wouldnt be anything dangerous happening at their school. well ill either go to ucf or apply to santa fe and transfer. my bro goes there so hell be asking his teachers and the person he works for to put in a good word for me. i was pretty sad about it for like 5 minutes but whatever im cool with it.

J’adoube:
you defenitely sound like an admission officer with their same tone.
It’s always good to have options available. It’s common sense.

Oh, I wonder if I’ll get mine tomorrow. I know from South Florida it usually takes two days to get something to Gainesville. So if elizabethlai is from Winter Park, and danny_125 is from North Florida (I’m assuming) then it’s possible…

Oh, I don’t even want to think about it. If you two didn’t get in, then I certainly won’t.

I’m just wondering though danny. Did you mention in your appeal letter that you had a lot of community college credits instead of AP? That seems to really set you apart. I know part of their policy with that type of credit is that it has to be factored into your HS GPA to be considered, which is what I fought against in my appeal.

I’m from miami.
Thats a valid reason, dvm. I would suppose that they are acquainted with my school’s academics. They would be thinking, “This dude is only taking 3 AP’s?”
I don’t understand where your coming from on your appeal…

Yeah. My appeal is kinda wacko, saying “Hey! Ignore your stupid policy and look at the goddamn credit from FAU. Also, ignore my HS GPA and pay more attention to my awards and test score, because my disability impacted my grades. Oh, and BTW, I would be the fourth generation in my family to attend UF, so I have a big legacy.”

That doesn’t really give my argument justice, but it’s the funny version of my letter. Oh, what the heck. Let me just copy and paste my letter here if anyone wants to read my sad diatribe:

Members of the Student Admissions Committee:

I am appealing my decision to the University of Florida because of my unique academic circumstances. Before I entered high school, I was placed in remedial classes due to a learning disability. I am currently a strong honors student; yet, the path I took was different from my peers. I was mainstreamed once I entered high school and began to take Advanced Placement and honors classes at a quick but reasonable pace. Still, my delayed entrance into these classes impacted my weighted GPA .

I chose to demonstrate my ability to succeed in college level classes at the Florida Atlantic University Honors Summer Institute last year. Out of their applicants, the FAU Wilkes Honors College accepted only thirty-two students to take a 3000 level course at their campus in Jupiter at an accelerated pace over the course of a month. The course I took was Honors Genetics, Disease, and the Environment, which pertains to my interests in Environmental and Political Science. My efforts in this program earned me an “A” in this significantly more demanding course, and an official transcript was sent to the University of Florida to be reviewed with my application. However, after the review process, I was notified that my grade in the course was unevaluated because it did not appear on my high school transcript or factored into my GPA. Considering my unique circumstances, I believe this missing piece of information misrepresented my overall academic achievement during the application review process. Therefore, I am enclosing a personal copy of the transcript with my appeal; an official copy has also been sent to the university. I urge the committee to admit the use of this transcript as part of the appeal process.

I further sought to demonstrate my academic ability through other mediums. I am participating in the National History Day competition this year and have also participated in the past in the documentary division. The National History Day organization organizes school, county, state, and national levels of competition. I have twice participated in the national competition in Washington D.C. as a representative of the state of Florida, and once earned a place as a finalist—the top ten in the nation. This year, I have already placed 1st in the county competition, and the state competition will be held this May. My participation in National History Day did not only evolve my understanding of history; my projects focused on legal and political issues, which directly pertains to my interest in Political Science.
I am hopeful that the appeals committee will understand the reasons for my weighted GPA, and view my success in competition and the FAU Honors Summer Institute as indicators for success at the University of Florida. As a potential fourth generation student at the University of Florida in my family, I understand that admissions at the university is a rigorous and selective process, but wish that the committee would review my application a second time to consider my unique circumstances, achievements, and attributes.

With Thanks,

This was exactly one page long.

my bro who goes to uf thinks its like they look down upon students with disabilities since i have one too. man i feel like i just tortured myself in my senior year. 6 APs and 8 honor societies. fun stuff. all for UF.

Did you hear the acceptance statistics from the UCF Burnett Honors College? Only 20% were accepted. The college only considers students in the top 10% of their incoming freshman by order of the president unless they have a very significant reason to accept them otherwise. So it’s like only 2% of incoming freshman were admitted. The average GPA was about a 4.1. I was admitted.

They had a part of their application when they list all the existing AP and IB classes and ask you to put a check next to the ones you took. There is also a box for dual enrollment where you write-in your classes. I felt pathetic only checking one box for AP Environment. Also, they list a whole bunch of national merit awards and other recognitions which they ask you to put a check next to the ones you had. I only had one–Bright Futures. Again, pathetic. Still, they obviously saw something in my application. New College saw something. I’m trying to get UF to see that something, whatever it may have been.

man now youre scaring me. i didnt get into burnett yet. i applied pretty late because i was deciding on what to do. hopefully i do get in though. and community colleges are cheaper than regular colleges right?

dvm, allow me to console you with the bare truth. it doesn’t matter where you get your undergrad degree from; it could be from fiu, ucf, or uf. you’re going to do what you’re going to do, regardless of where you attend school for the next 4 years. believe me, i saw my brother get into uf, but now hes just graduated, is broke as a joke, and still has the same **** work ethic. if your appeal doesnt work out, who cares. the UCF honors program sounds awesome.

i’m appealing to uf simply because I would go there if i got in, and because i’ve been infatuated with uf for years, dating back to elementary school. sad huh? lol

i’m over it though. the way I see it, we gave them one more chance to correct their mistake. if they **** it up again, then i’m going to FSU honors with the 9.6k they’ll pay me over four years.
