Well we submitted the FAFSA and the CalGrant awarded me $11k for UCSB…and we make around $78k, family of four, although our financial situation is pretty screwed…(my parents bought a home literally right before the 08 stock market crash…)

I think you can sign up for work study during orientation or during the first few days of school. I would e-mail the school just in case. Here is a breakdown of my financial aid below. I think it’s a pretty good deal, seeing as that I only have about $7k in loans, so I won’t need to pay back a whole lot after graduation (probably $30k in loans by graduation)

Unofficial Grants and Scholarships $21774
Possible Cal Grant Eligibility $11124
UCSB New Freshman Scholarship $1500
Federal Pell Grant $5550
University of California Grant $3600

Unofficial Work-Study Eligibility $2000
*
Unofficial Loan Eligibility $7100
Federal Perkins Loan $2300
Recommended Subsidized Direct Stafford Loan $3500

It costs $30,874 to go to UCSB, so I’ve got everything covered. However, my financial aid may changed based on state budgets and my CalGrant, so I’m praying it doesnt!

IMPORTANT QUESTION…
Is there a distinction between one’s CalGrant and Pell Grant money versus the FAFSA money…
soooo…on top of the money in the “unofficial” letter, will we be receiving another form of aid?

these are more information from cal state LA

Glad u all are poor and can get sum type of freakin aid. yea, i get nothing cause my parents are well off and have saved.

Johnny, we need to tell our folks to stop working, hee hee hee …

i live in orange county california and both my parents earn good money. however, living in orange county is a huge expense in itself and my parents also have to pay for my sisters college tuition. i’m not poor, i’m not rich either, our circumstances are just different.

Wait I was awarded a CalGrant and there’s nothing in the Unofficial Aid Letter that says “Possible CalGrant Eligibility”

“Possible CalGrant Eligibility” , if I understand correctly, you are eligible for Cal Grant, but depending on how much they really have, you might or might not receive up to what you are eligible … with the current economic condition, I don’t know … you could find out more from here

That’s so weird though…the CalGrant website says that they’ve awarded me $11k for UCSB based on my FAFSA and GPA, but nothing on the CalGrant in my unofficial aid letter. Idk I guess I should contact the FinAid people just in case.

atticlights, I hope they accidentally gave your 11K to me, I really need the money !!!

Haha I’m starting to worry they gave me 11k by mistake!!

i’ve heard of that happening to other people. just call the UCSB financial aid office and they should take care of it.

atticlights, do not call, I need your 11K, please, I am begging you …

Just emailed them in case my brain slips up and forgets to call during the week. I’ll post their response here so other people in my situation would know what to do.

Leakers, try browsing around for scholarships, there’s a lot of money out there :0) which reminds me I have deadlines coming up eeeegh.

tsilva, You are gold. My d has been at UCSD for 3 years and your package is sweet.

haha thanks i’m really excited about it. i hope i can secure a work study spot though, but if i don’t, my parents will just have to pay $2k. i’m not sure how they hand those out, do we have to apply?

Guys do you think I should talk to them about my family’s financial situation? We’re very middle class (income between $50-$100k), but my parents’ bought a home right before the crash in 08 (basically, we now have a house that’s worth 1/3 of what we paid for originally) To summarize our situation right now is underwater…my parents are trying to shortsale our home which would basically destroy their credit for at least two years…

So if I call/meet up with the finaid people and tell them this, do you guys think they’ll give me more money, or is it hopeless?

I say give it a shot. can’t hurt.
