some ppl know theyve gotten in bc they have a teacher or someone who's "in" w/ admissions.

Nobody knows they've gotten in yet. The admissions officers are still in committee, so it's likely that at this point, some people have been definitely rejected, but nobody's been definitely admitted.

Listen, I'm "in" with admissions to the extent that several of the admissions officers are friends of mine, but I didn't know last year whether my cousin had been admitted until decisions came out. And if I had asked my friends in admissions, they would not have told me.

collegealum I think they do recruit for crew. I remember my interviewer told me the only sport she couldn't talk to me about was crew because there's recruiting.

aerableparable, collegealum is right. There is no special recruiting for crew. Technically, there is recruiting for every sport (cf http://web.mit.edu/athletics/www/varsity/recruit-me.html). The difference is that with athletics at MIT, a coach can inform the admissions office that a particular applicant shows exceptional athletic promise, but they cannot get them in. As I understand it, its roughly equivalent to the music department reviewing submitted samples, or visual arts looking at portfolios. The relevant department says "Wow, cool" and that influences but does not determine an admissions decision.

Wait so mollie, does a 15th release date look unlikely then if they are still in committee?

That's absolutely correct. You could have the potential to make a team but you must be admitted first. The reason they do recruit for crew is because they are Division I for this sport...Div 3 for all others.

And its final, March 15th decisions.... :D :(

Well, the March 15 release date is confirmed now. :)

They usually announce the date while they're still in committee -- the trick is to be far enough through that they can predict when the end will be.

EDIT: And crew is not the only sport in which MIT is division I -- fencing is also, and I believe there are a handful of others. MIT still does not recruit for these division I sports in the way that other schools do, as collegealum and Mikalye have pointed out.

If you are not specifically "recruited" for the team, but rather the coach simply helps you to get in, does that mean you can choose not to play the particular sport once you are admitted? Or is participation binding since it was a factor in your admission?

"the coach simply helps you get in" This is a big deal, and shouldn't be taken lightly. If the coach really did have that much pull, I wouldn't disappoint him by not joining the team.....or by quitting the team mid-season.
