Did you take French?

Hey there, I'm going to be taking French I next year... if you've been in it before, do you have any advice to me? I'll probably flunk out within the first... um... three days? Haha.

ahh, french isn't difficult at all! the pronounciation is difficult sometimes, though. spelling is relatively simple without all the nuances of english, and while there are a good number of irregular verbs, there's a general structure, unlike with English. and alot of tenses that actually make sense.

the best thing that helped me in french was watching french film obsessively, but that may just be me being nerdy.

Thanks for the advice. i think it'll be especially hard with spelling because alot of the letters don't make the same sound they would in english. and they often switch around words like in french it would say "the ran dog" instead of the dog ran. But that's just what I've noticed so far.

French is kind of tricky for some people. The hardest thing would probably be when to use certain tenses. Like the difference between the imperfect and the past tense are hard. And the subjunctive is only semi hard because we don't have it in English. If your a good student, you will probably pass with an A until AP French. AP French is when most people start to do bad (at least at my school). You'll be fine if you just study and get to understand the material rather than memorizing.

What do you mean 'the imperfect'?

Thanks for the heads up, I hope I do good. I have to get A's in all my classes from now on or my GPA's shot =[

The imperfect is just another way to put something into the past tense, but there are rules when to use which (and I still can't remember it :(). You don't need to worry about that until French 2. If you have straight As now, you'll be fine in French. Everyone that I know who had straight As get As in French so i honestly wouldn't stress it too much unless you have a really bad teacher.

Oh okay, I have another year til French II so that's good.
I guess I'm going to fail French then cause I don't have straight A's now haha.
I'm planning on it next year though (but again, that still probably won't happen).
We'll just have to wait and see I guess then.

French is awesome!!!

I woudn't sweat it. Foreign language courses do a good job at guiding you through the language

french is the spawn of satan.

Have you taken any other languages before? How did you do in them?

french is easy. and everyone basically has to take foreign languages now, and french and spanish are basically the easiest to learn, so dont have a defeatist attitude; if you're intelligent enough to come here on CC you'll probably get an A in the class lol. it is an intro class after all.

"french is the spawn of satan."
What??

And no, I haven't taken any other languages before.
I hope so GreenDayFan =/

french is extremely easy.
especially french 1, it's learning some verbs and some vocabulary, how to say hi and ask simple questions, and pronunciation sounds hard and annoying but you get used to it, and every french teacher i've had didn't penalized anybody for not being able to speak it perfectly.
don't even sweat it, if you do all your homework, you can't help but learn something and do well on tests with a little studying.

I actually find french pretty hard, but i think i just suck at foreign languages in general. And I have a really bad teacher. Overall, the class always seems to make me hate life.

Hm. So like, two posts say it's extremely easy and if I'm not completely lazy I can ace it, and two more say it's completely impossible and I'm gonna fail.
Sweet.

there's nothing impossible about it. those people dont know what they're talking about. french 1 i especially, c'mon, it's not gonna be hard. it's just not. why are you so worried about french as opposed to other subjects? it's really no harder than any other class, and it's a lot easier than many.

Well I'll be taking French 1-4, so eventually it will get harder or course, and I'm not sure if it'll be "impossible" (hard) then... I'm just curious and preparing myself as much as I can =]

you'll have to wait and see, you can't ask others really. you don't know if you're good at learning languages yet. y'know? but you seem to be worried, and it's not necessary.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be good at learning languages, that's just me.
Like I said I'm just curious on other people's experience with French class
