My son applied and was accepted to American University, but decided not to attend. He got a loan disbursement disclosure statement yesterday from the US Department of Education. There was also a disbursement back in August 2007 that we did not know about. He called and they admitted there was a mistake. They were not at all apologetic. Apparently there were other students impacted. Check your mail carefully and read the school information in section 4.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. What is a loan disbursement? You mean they think your son received money, but he didn't?

American University received the proceeds of a direct loan taken out in my sons name.

Oh, wow, that's even worse. Do you think it's just American University?

Also, I don't know how that can even happen. Before taking out a loan, a student has to have counseling. My daughter did it online, and it was quite a big deal, lots of questions. How could a school receive loan money if the student hasn't gone through the counseling?
