My friend was interested in a certain school but at the end decided against finishing the application and submitting. She's perfectly comfortable forgetting the school, but is concerned that her teachers will know? Any chance common app will alert them that it wasn't submitted? My first thought was "What, no!" but a second opinion is always nice :) Thanks bunches!

It would be courteous for your friend to notify the college counseling office at your high school that she will not be completing her application. Then they won’t bother to send her mid-year report. They have tons to do, so reducing their work load would be a considerate thing to do. The teachers may or may not find out. But assuming she is using the Common App to apply to schools, the letters will be used for other schools as well, right? Then why does it matter?

Yeah, well the reason was that yes the same letters are used, but a particular teacher wanted her to try for a certain top school and now she’s more set on a great in state uni.

Advise her to be honest with the teacher rather than pull the avoidance thing. Even if it’s disappointing to the teacher who is pulling for her to the top college, if the teacher asks, he/she is due the truth .

“Thank you very much for your assistance and belief in me but in the end, my family and I decided that school X will best fit me. I made the tough decision to not complete my application to school Y.”
