I thought it would be a good idea to start a discussion for people who got accepted into UT, but didn’t get the major they wanted. I wasn’t able to get the major I wanted, and have a few questions, and I thought others might as well.
I was going to pick Physics, but as soon as I clicked refresh the page crashed (504 gateway error), and when I was finally able to get through, Physics and Mathematics were already gone. I settled for sustainability. When I checked on my status my second choice is still listed. Will I be able to change my first choice (sustainability) with my second choice (something that I actually want - computer engineering)?
If not, I read that you can request a major change starting April 1st, and was just wondering if it is possible to change to engineering major/computer science (natural science), or are they usually all full and I probably won’t get them?
I really don’t know how it is going to work this year, because it looks like there are some changes every year.
In the past after May 1 UT had some extra spaces because some people who got accepted decided to go elsewhere, and students could get into engineering and other impacted majors during summer orientation.
Also in the past internal transfers to physics and mathematics were not that difficult if you had good grades in introductory classes and could manage workload because some CNS students changed their majors to something easier right after first semester, or even during. Some because of grades, some because of parties.
To make it easier for transfer some students don’t claim certain AP credits and repeat them as introductoryclasses to get better grades.

One student from our HS, who studied biology at UT, had trouble finding internships and felt like he had bad job prospective, He took Elements of Computing Certificate (had to stay a semester longer because he figured out pretty late that he needed this certificate) and got job right away.
Scientific Computing Certificate is very good too because statistics is needed everywhere, and it is a great combination with any major.
Thanks, Ya Ya! That really helped. I guess I’m going to try to change my major towards the end of April, and if I’m not able to get it I will decline UT, and go to A&M (they gave me my first choice: chemical engineering)
@poofstyle - do know at A&M you are entered into a general engineering program first and then apply to your specific major late Spring. They have the stats of each engineering major listed on their advising page. The most competitive was mechanical, the least computer science. Chemical was in the middle at about a 50% acceptance. They also look at EC besides academic stats when admitting into each discipline.
Of the alternate majors they have listed, is there any one that I can go to that would maximize my chances of transferring over to Computer Science next year? Or is transfer admission based purely on GPA, and it doesn’t matter what the previous major was?
Right now, I’m leaning towards Philosophy because I’m interested in that, but would Undergraduate Studies be better for transfer chance?

UT is a research university. All the research is about media studies. RTF needs students for these classes, I guess. It can be anyone who likes research.
@Rahultimate Thanks for the list. I agree. For someone interested in CNS, not much there of interest. As far as I can tell, CS doesn’t give anything more specific than the CNS requirements of:
24 hours of in-residence coursework
mathematics and science coursework taken in-residence
cumulative UT GPA
mathematics and science UT GPA
number of applicants versus number of available slots desired major
You might look in the transfer thread and see suggestions there from those going through the process now. Seems like undergraduate studies is the most likely choice listed right now. From what I gather, some majors open again later in the spring and summer, so you might try again then.
Geosciences is one of the BEST UT schools. It is very small and often overlooked.
But I heard “table talk”. don’t have any links or any proof, that this school gives very nice scholarships to top students, almost automatically, and their internships are better paid than engineering.
Probably it was about Jackson Scholars program, I don’t know.
