Hey guys jw wut the difference is between weighted gpa and unweighted gpa. Does it have anything to do with honors credit or anything like that? Thnx for the help.

unweighted GPA is out of a 4.0 scale.....like

A=4.0
B=3.0
C=2.0

etc....weighted is when u take an honors/AP course or w/e (not regular)
and that is out a 5.0 scale

A=5.0
B=4.0
C=3.0

etc.....

but if u take a regular class and get an A, on the weighted scale that would still be a 4.0/5.0....so basically on the weighted system, an A in a regular class is weighted the same as a B in an honors class

standard weighting is 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP

example= B in Geometry is 3.0. B in honors geometry is 3.5. B in AP calc is 4.0

so on an unweighted scale an A in an honors class only counts as a 4.0 and a B in an honors class counts as a 3.0?

wow thats weird....thats not how my school does it....they weight AP and honors the same but urs probly makes more sense

joe107: yea cause its UNWEIGHTED they dont care if its honors or not its just to see what kinda grades u got....the weighted GPA is what takes into the rigor of ur curriculum

You are correct, young man. Colleges that use unweighted gpas have other ways for rewarding strength of curric.

umm my gpa right now is 3.8 and i just finished 10th grade. Do u guys still think i have a chance at getting into UCSD?

if thats an unweighted GPA and u continue with that, score well on ur SATs etc etc then u should be fine.....if thats a weighted GPA um sorry to be blunt but no unless ur in state

umm i am in state and i have only taken one honors class so far so wut do u think? Also is 3.7 UW gpa good enough?

uh....try to start taking more honors/AP classes if u can thats a good GPA and its good that ur in state but colleges would rather see a low GPA person who took honors/AP courses than a 4.0 person who basically took all regular classes withouth challenging himself at all thruout high school

At my school, we go on a 100 pt scale, and honors is worth 8 points, while AP is worth 10. We don't calculate an unweighted GPA. The system helps me when I get a 93 in English like last year and it averages as a 103. It hurts this year though when I only get 10 points for AP Calc, while a senior taking Honors Pre Cal or Honors Math Analysis would gvet 8 points for a much easier course. Anyone else's school use this system?

Most colleges take the unweighted core grades and re-weight then per their own system. Bette colleges also are knowledgable about grading patterns in individual high schools.

If your not taking honors and AP courses and your high school readily makes them available, don't expect to be competitive with students in your school who are taking the more challanging courses

To what extent will a college take someone with a lower GPA yet harder schedule over someone with a higher GPA and easier school. For example, my friend Will can get into UT automatically, but to most colleges, my record is pretty close to his I would think.

His GPA is 97.7 (rank: 3/75) with the following Honors courses

Honors Algebra I (taken as a freshmen)
Honors Geometry (taken as a soph)
Honors Algebra II (taken as a Jr.)
Honors English I
Honors English II
AP English III (score: 4)
AP English IV
Honors Physics
Honors Spanish 3

This year he's taking topics in math, which is a math course designed for liberal arts majors, and is insanely easy. Other than community service and being in the NHS, he doesn't have any extracurriculars/awards. His SAT score is a pretty respectable 1960.

My GPA is 94 even (rank: 15/75) with the following Honors courses

Honors Algebra (taken in 8th grade)
Honors Geometry (taken in 9th)
Honors Algebra II (taen in 10th)
Honors Pre-Cal
AP Calculus
Honors English
Honors English II
AP English III (score: 5)
AP English IV
Honors Physics
Honors Chemistry

I have all the honors classes offered other than Honors Physics 2 or Honors Bio 2 (I chose a 4th year of math, over a 4th of science, didnt want both). Nobody signed up for Honors French 3 in my grade because the teacher was a psycho, so technically I wasn't dodging an honors class there since the class doesn't exist this year.

My extracurriculars include 3 years of basketball, 1 year of tennis, 5 years as a Mavs ballboy, being a part of the NASA aerospace scholars program, receiving National Merit commendee for scoring 96th percentile on my PSAT, being in Calculus Club, being an ambassador, and participating in FCA.

His GPA probably puts him ahead of me slightly, but at UT, they just look at it and nothing else.

Vyse,

My school does something similar. We get 7 points for honors and 10 for AP/CL classes. I am in the top 10% (I think) out of 241 students with a 100.03.
