Difficulty: Political Economy 100/Japanese 7A/Asian American Studies 20A?

I'm a sophomore either going pre-Haas or Political Economy and am taking these 3 classes this semester (Fall '10) in addition to UGBA 10. I'm having some difficulty with all the readings (~800-900 pages a week total) required and was wondering if anyone had some tips regarding studying for midterms or just studying in general for these classes? Also, I'm a little worried about the difficulty of the classes (especially in combination with each other) and any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

AAS 20A is one of the easiest classes I took at Cal (Fall '07 with Omi), and I don’t mean this unkindly. A lot of the material was interesting to me so the reading went by quickly, and the tests and paper prompt were all very straightforward. PEIS 100 (Fall '09 with Karras) is a bit denser but still very manageable and the tests are pretty accommodating, i.e. you get a choice of essay questions to answer. With both classes, as with the majority of courses in the social studies, you can do fine even if you only skim a lot of the readings. Look for key points and make sure you know them, and that frees up a good chunk of time which you would otherwise have spent poring over every single word. Haven’t taken Japanese 7A but I assume since it’s a language class that it’s pretty time-intensive. All the more reason to skim some of the readings for your other classes so you can better manage your time. Good luck.
