Dilemma: transfer to a national university to a regional university?

Hi, I'm an international student, currently in my freshman year at University of Miami. While the school did indeed make an impressive leap in ranking in recent years (it jumped 9 places in US News Ranking this year alone), and I have made some really good connections on campus, I feel for the most part disoriented. Im currently in the business school and the fact that this school is a non-target to firms in New York/known as a "party school" does not help. I also prefer to live in big cities such as New York compared to where my school is located (Coral Gables, essentially a suburb).

Those are some of the reasons that make me want to transfer to another school. After doing some school searches, I found Baruch College, which is a part of the CUNY system. It is located right in Manhattan, the school of business is apparently a semi-target to NY firms, and it is cheaper to go there too, so I would get to live and study in New York at a cheaper price than I do in Coral Gables.

However, a a lot of my friends advised me against this move. They said that it would be a downgrade (UM is ranked 38th in the national university ranking), and they said UM's alumni network would be much better than Baruch's, which would help me in finding internship and a job after graduation. However, I think that being in New York would give me an advantage in finding internships, in addition, I believe it is rather difficult for me to apply for a job all the way up in New York.

So I don't know whether I should apply to Baruch or not. Any opinion offered would be great. And if you have extensive knowledge on applying to Baruch College, plea let me know, thanks!

I was accepted to both UMiami and Baruch, if it was only between those two for me, then I would have picked UMiami in a heartbeat. You can’t compare a large, private university like UMiami to a public school like Baruch. While Baruch is a good school and Zicklin is a great program, but the comparision is tough here. Living in NYC is going to be really costly too, Baruch’s dorm doesn’t fit everyone so you’ll most likely have to be on your own off-campus. Anyways, Good luck =)

it seems to me that Baruch’s business school is much stronger and more renowned than UMiami’s business school. So far I have seen Baruch on quite a number of undergrad business school ranking but no mention of UMiami. In addition, I want to work in New York upon graduation and it seems naturally to me that I would have an edge graduating from an university that is located right in Manhattan. and I would pay less attending Baruch. Any mroe opinion would be appreciated, thanks!

Given these two options, stay where you are. Umiami is a fantastic school and its reputation gets better and better every year. While Baurach is a business school and has the resources of a city at your finger tips, it is a very ‘professional’ school. If you think you are disoriented at Miami, I can’t even imagine how you would feel at Baurach, a school with barley a campus, a bunch of commuters and in the middle of NYC. From what I’ve heard from friends, people at baurach are more interested in internships and life after college that they don’t enjoy the typical college experience. Stay at miami, join some clubs. If you are totally unhappy, then look at other schools that have good business schools with a campus.
