Dining hall assortment?

I visited during Cornell Days and ate at Hans Bethe, I think after looking at the map, for lunch. There was barely any food there at all. I did get a sense that there had, at one point, been more food and the quality seemed fine, but I was really put off by the fact that they had almost nothing beyond salads.

Was this a big anomaly?

I’ve never eaten at Bethe, but that surprises me. Whenever I’ve eaten in dining halls, I’ve been very impressed. Lunch in the more residential areas may be smaller because its less common to return home for lunch than dinner, but your experience sounds atypical.

Lunch on West Campus during the week days are not a good indicator of the dining hall experience here since most people eat on campus they don’t prepare much food. It would be better to try out Appel/Okenshields for lunch and any of the dining hall for dinner.

if you ate there after 2pm, then you probably had Hans Bethe’s “Late Lunch.” In that case, all they have are salad’s and some sandwich meats.

I ate at Appel and the selection was very impressive!

When I was there for DHW last fall, we had brunch at Hans Bethe and it was absolutely fantastic. Everything you could possibly want.

They were probably just kind of closing down the cafeteria and not making any more food.

yeah if you get to the dining hall towards the end of the dining hour then you will be out of luck…

try oakies or appel for lunch next time…

I don’t think you need to worry about the quality of the food at Cornell.

Yeah I ate at Trillium and the Hotel school during Cornell, the food was ridiculously good (not to mention the really good dinners in Collegetown)

On West, dining hall lunches are horrible. Breakfast on weekdays is horrible, but on weekends, it’s pretty good. Dinner is the best meal and it’s pretty good as well. All in all, I’d say the West dining halls are only slightly above average.

Okenshield’s for lunch is mediocre. Dinner is mediocre.

If you want really good food, go to the cash places. These include amazing food options at Ivy Room (my absolute favorite!), Hughes Dining (a hidden secret in the law school), some of the cafes have good food like Mattin’s in the engineering quad and the ones in the libraries.

how does Hughes compare to Ivy Room?

thing about meal plans…if they’re paying for 14/meals/week then they should actually use them…

eating on campus can be expensive…$10 at least (with drink)

terrace, macs, trillium, martha’s, and atrium are also pretty good, haven’t aten at most of the others not already mentioned in this topic

and i like hughes better than ivy room

I never spent $10 for any meal on campus.

The beautiful new Synapsis Cafe in the equally beautiful new Weill Hall (the white building that looks like it’s made out of legos) is also extremely good.

Weill Hall? Where’s that?

Across from Kennedy, next to the biotechnology building, behind Lynah.

Go there and just look for a big white lego-like building (or a sign for synapsis)

Oh cool, thanks

I actually think Okenshields has the best lunch and dinner. They portion the foods so it is easy to take and eat and they always have a nice selection of foods, from pretzels with cheese to egg fried rice, etc.

Other than the omelletes in the morning, I find Appel to be a toss up. Sometimes there is good food at the chefs table, but other times, I have to make a sandwich or have soup. RPCC is good for dinner, but Mongo gets old after a while. The pizzas are really nasty almost everywhere here. The cheese always tastes weird. Seems like no one knows how to make a good NYC style pizza.

There have been entire weeks where I’ve been so sick of dining hall food that I just order out.

I went to Appel for lunch and thought it was great.
The pizza was decent (and of the healthier variety, thin and not greasy) and the salad was fresh.
Definitely a good dining hall, though carrying a wobbly tray up a ridiculous amount of stairs was not fun, haha.
