Discipline

I am curious as to how far back prep schools look into discipline. I received a few stupid detentions in middle school for reasons that were not bad at all. For example, a kid at a nearby table farted and the teacher around us heard. Since the kid would not admit it was him, the teacher just gave him and the surrounding tables detentions. Another example, on the first day of school, I noticed a friend who did not know where to sit. I discreetly waved over to him hoping he would sit with us. In exchange, I received a detention for disruptive behavior while a teacher is talking. I really hope prep schools wont care about these past actions. I will be applying for prep school as a sophomore and all these incidents happened in middle school, will they still have a factor in my application?

You should ask for your complete transcript including your disciplinary record from your guidance or counselor’s office. This should give you an opportunity to review information that will be sent to the schools you are applying.

I don’t think that schools care about minor disciplines. My son had some major disciplinary problems, which probably cost him admission to most of the schools he applied to, but he also demonstrated steady, if imperfect, progress through 4 years of middle school. One boarding school took a chance on him, and he’s a senior now - he’s had some major bumps in the road there, too, but I think he ended up in the right place, and his younger brother is thriving as a sophomore at the same school.
