Hi, I'm worried about what constitutes a "viable" interest in the eyes of an adcom. I'm a passionate writer, but haven't pursued it up until this year (haven't really been thinking about college that much at all, actually). I'll be a junior next year, but due to conflicting time constraints I haven't been able to join any clubs that actively "display" my writing interest. I run cross country and track, which take up a good chunk of my time. Writing is something I think I can passionately talk about in my college essays, but I lack proof. Would writing contests or writing for a local organization over summer make up for my lack of involvement in writing clubs at school? Thanks for any advice.

Showing interest doesn’t always have to occur during or related to school. Yes, you can show your passion for writing by involvement in summer programs, writing contests, etc. While it would have been better to have shown some demonstrated interest in writing earlier, it’s definitely not too late.
