Just what is this diversity coalition thing...? And how come only some ppl get the e-mail/snail mail, while others don't? Is it something completely random?

I recieved the coalition for diversity in the mail about 6 weeks ago. Never recieved an email for it though. Went to the one in Los Angeles. They had a small luncheon and said that they were not connected with admissions. They talked about the campus, housing, financial aid, etc... There was probably about 100 applicants there... what I don't get is why would they go through all that trouble to tell us how great Berkeley is after we applied? It seemed to me to be some sort of recruiting, but why if they weren't connected to admissions. I asked my school counselor about it and he wasn't aware of any other student in the school getting the invite to the reception.

yea exactly!! that's my questions too...like WHY would they go through all that trouble e-mailing or snail mailing some people and just telling them about how great cal is if that applicant is likely to be rejected...

You should call and ask them.

My son was at the LA program and one of the speakers said that approx 1000 applicants are invited to the Diversity Coalition. He is in a small school with 84 seniors, only 3 applied to Berkeley and the other 2 did not get invited.

Hmm. I have no idea if an invitation to the Diversity Coalition is linked to admissions. But Harvard sent out a random letter earlier this year to all minorities (I think) which also has no impact on admissions.

Who knows what these admissions people do? Sometimes I think they're purposely trying to play with us.

I also received one of them. I hope it means something... cuz I know a friend who is not a minority even thought I am a URM. Btw, what's a berkeley cares program? cuz I got a mail from them in jan 24 reminding me to apply for financial aid...

The e-mail explicitly stated that they were in no way connected to the admissions office. They are also called the Diversity Coalition for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering. I'm guessing that an e-mail/letter from this Coalition has to do with the choice of the applicant's major(?)(once again, GUESSING).

It would be nice if this was somehow linked with admissions...hopeful wish maybe. I'm thinking the same thing as idylliwindll right now! =)

lol..of course it's a hopeful wish. But I need that wish to come true cuz UCB is my dream school even though my chances for admission are pretty slim.

^ Good Luck Vagan! =)

Believe me if you don't get in, you wouldn't be missing out on much.

the Diversity Coalition was not minority or low income related as my son is neither.
Polite Antagonis, you are so offensive.

I got this Diversity Coalition thing..and I'm definitely not Berkeley material so this most likely has nothing to do with admissions
