We live very near Amherst and my son hasn't heard yet. In addition, we received 2 sets of applications, one in May which he mailed back immediately, and one in August. The letter states that all applicants will be notified of their status in early September and all INVITED students will receive permission forms and travel planning information at that time.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and was delighted to see a discussion of the DIV weekend. Haven't filled out my profile yet, but am a single, "older" mom, short on financial assets, with a son entering his senior year. Amherst is his first choice, so I'm hopeful he's accepted.

A close acquaintance who graduated from there told me that a fair number of students who are accepted are legacy students (children of alumni). It seemed he was saying they have preference over non-legacy candidates, but I'm not positive about that. He also confirmed that the college decided to do away with loans and provide outright grants for those that qualify.

Phishe, thanks for that info. My D is a rising senior who was invited in August to apply to the DOHW. She did, and is waiting excitedly to hear if she was accepted. We did get a phone msg that she had not sent her HS transcipt; seems like a fairly fundamental thing for her to have overlooked. I never saw the application so your info is much appreciated.

So sorry to hear that... We haven't heard yet -- don't know if that's good or bad... Some other invitations to apply for similar programs at other liberal arts colleges have turned up in the mail in the past few days, though, so maybe your D will be getting some of those too, soon. Best of luck!

Thanks, supportive. She was lucky enough to receive invitations - that is, invitations to apply - to a similar function at the other 2 schools that top her list. Since they are not quite so high profile as Amherst, perhaps she'll have better luck there. She's bummed, though, since Amherst is her favorite school.

We're hoping it's not a sign that applying to Amherst will be futile!

Indeed it is! We didn't know there was any such thing as these diversity open houses. Had we known, I would have encouraged her to send her ACT scores to more scores.

Hmmm.... I wonder if it's too late for that now.....

Not getting accepted to the Diversity Weekend doesn't mean your daughter won't be favorably considered when she applies. Also, last year, someone who attended the diversity weekend was not accepted. But, that may be a reflection of how they came across at the event. Being accepted certainly enhances greatly ones chances of being accepted to Amherst. I'm not aware of a similiar program in the Spring. I thought that program was only for accepted students.
