Does WU have a diversity or multicultural weekends in the fall for minority and other perspective applicants? I notice from posts last year that they did. It haven't read about one for this fall. I also notice that they have some admitted urm students return in the Spring. Thanks.

Yes, WashU has something called Multicultural Weekend. After you get accepted and if you're a minority, they fly you over to their campus (free of charge, includes housing). Multicultural Weekend takes place during April.

They also have one in September/October called Discovery Weekend.

Yes, my D received a couple of postcards this summer saying that she will soon get information about Discovery days.

Thanks for the information. My daughter is African American and very interested in Washington University. She visited last Spring Break. Do you know how the list is generated? I'd love for her to have the opportunity to visit the campus again. She's also applying to the Amherst Diversity Weekend.

hi impw,
They likely got her name from the PSAT/NMSP. My D put down WUSTL as one of her schools for NMS last spring. WUSTL doesn't give $$ for NMS, but she wanted to show interest in the school as we're far away and she was likely not going to be able to visit. She is also a Venture Scholar so they might have gotten her name from them. WUSTL hasn't sent out the detailed information yet, so you might want to call or e-mail them to see if your daughter can participate, it couldn't hurt.

My D has also applied to the Amherst weekend, for the second session. Since we're on the west coast, it will really help if she can participate in some of these opportunities to help develop her school list.

WashU gives money for NMS. What's even better, they commit to giving it each year. I ended up getting $2000/year for it, and I think kids who got scholarships directly from National Merit (the "real" National Merit Scholars) get $2500/year.

achil,
Thanks for the info, it's good to know that NMS money is available. I was just going off the website, which doesn't list NMS, but I know that there is often merit aid available that isn't listed.

Is Discovery Weekend exclusively for minorities?

I'm not sure, they may include low income and first generation.

Thank you, I think I qualify under the former.

They have already started contacting attendees about schedueling plane reservations, so if your interested in going and have not been invited yet, you should give WUSTL a call and see if you can attend. Also, I don't know that they include low income students, it's jut a possibility. Good luck.
