Do Colleges like camps? If so, which ones are "good"?

I'm interested in going to summer camps...

Do colleges like "any old summer camp" (obviously not, but ... which ones?) or do they like prestigious ones, hard to get into ones, or ...? Or they don't mind, just that it focuses on your interests?

Also, who knows any good Debate camps where you can just good old DEBATE? (Public forum style) -- there's a Asia-Pacific tournament that I got Quarterfinalist...that's it. )=. About to join another one though.

And any one know any math camps that specifically prepares you for the AIME/USAMO and beyond? (I qualified for AIME last year, and was hoping that I can do better this year)

Everyone's talking about TASP and "prestigious summer programs", and I now recognize it's too late to fill out app (even though it's not deadline, but it's too late. Teachers on vacation, etc etc).

Am I missing out?

Thanks

living your life to look good on paper is AWESOME

My D went to a math camp the past three summers that she really enjoyed. Here is a link:

Texas Mathworks : Texas State University

You can also look on Cogito - Home for descriptions of other camps.

I'm thinking about debate camp.

I've searched for some debate camps and thought that these were interesting:

Dartmouth Debate Workshop (sophomores, juniors)

Michigan Classic

Stanford Debate Institute (probably very hard to get into)

Any other ones among those? I just want to have a camp where I can improve my debate skills and improve rebuttals, cross fire skills (I want to focus on public forum debate), maybe some impromptu with responding to questions, and how to structure arguments, etc. And attacking key points, finding holes in arguments, etc.

Any advice? Thanks

I guess I like pursuing my interests.

I think I might do debate camp whether or not colleges like it or not.

But what do they look for?

Also in your experience (summer campers), it is better to go to camps that involve more people -- that is, public speaking camps as opposed to math camps, because with math camps you can learn math all the time, but public speaking -- not as much?

Just a thought.

Thanks :D

I'm hoping to go into a math camp...

Is there something like MOSP, but less selective? (qualified for AIME last year, what if I want to aim (aime, haha ... anyways) for USAMO?)

math camps really aren't that selective. for most (awesomemath, texas mathworks, probably even canada/usa mathcamp), getting in isn't a huge deal or anything

Generally I'm not caring much about selectivity -- just whichever one is the most effective in producing better results for my next year's math contest :)

From the looks of it, would Canada/US Mathcamp be the "top" after MOSP? (which I'll try to aim for ... in junior by the looks of it now)

It's summer... do something you like, not something colleges want. If you interested in summer programs look around and choose one that meets your interest. Would you go to a scientific research camp just to look good if you like history?

^ Thanks for that.

Here's what I like: Debate camp, math camp, and hopefully a science internship.

And history would be on the bottom of my list, though I know you were just giving examples.

So I was thinking, while I am at it, why not know which ones are the prestigious ones, and be sure to apply to those in addition to ones I am interested in (and a bonus would be if those two camps were the same one!)

I think I've pretty much got my debate list down and my math list down.

There are a LOT of science internships, and there are threads just for them -- but it seems like those are for juniors/seniors or overachieving other peoples.

Who knows any semi-well-known science internships (hopefully for biological research -- i was interested in SSP until I found out it was completely not bio-related) around?

Hopefully one that is also 6 weeks and less, and/or has a deadline of an application that is around March ^^?

Thanks.

^ cool post count. Northwestern has a "pretigious" debate camp, I think.

^ Not a bad post count either xD

The Princeton University Summer Journalism Program is a selective, completely free program.

PLEASE NOTE -- THE DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 20, 2009 (11:59 PM)

Please visit Summer Journalism Program: The Princeton University Summer Journalism Program for the application.

Hmm...try to choose a program because you're interested in what they offer, don't choose soley on the basis of its "prestigious-ness". As long as you've had a profound experience at the program you attend that's all that matters and the college will give importance to this.
