Do colleges normally call applicants?

Not acceptees--just applicants.

I don't have a cell phone and my house phone is almost never working because my dad turns off the electricity in the whole house to force me to sleep and almost never turns it on unless I yell at him to do so.

Of course, by the time I get home, colleges' offices will be closed already. Considering they can't leave messages if the phone isn't even on...

can not having a phone screw me out of acceptances?

If they really need something, they’ll contact the school. Since you’re on the internet, I assume you gave them an email addy too, right? Plus, if you’re phone is off, you still have voice mail, right?

Regardless, don’t sweat it.

hmmm im not sure sure actually

i dont know; if the power that the house phone is connected to isnt running, is there still a voice mail?

I dont own a cell phone, so that might complicate things.

Well if you don’t have a cell phone…your home phone probably won’t take messages without electricity.
But I agree if they really need to contact you, they’ll probably try your school. Or better yet, ask to use the office phone during lunch, call your college through there, and explain the situation.
And they have your email right? That helps.

Do you have phone service via your cable or something? If it is regular old-fashioned phone service, the power has nothing to do with it - the lines are totally separate. But you do have to have a corded phone since cordless ones use electricity.

They don’t really need to call you antonio. Relax

Generally colleges will not call you. If something is missing that you need to send, they will usually send a letter. A number of colleges, not in in top tiers, do sometimes call (or have a dean, student or alumnus call) as part of the recruiting effort

“can not having a phone screw me out of acceptances”?

I don’t think you should worry. There probably isn’t any reason to have to contact you. But, IF they did…they’ll find a way. As far as your being advised of an acceptance, just wait until the date they announce, then… if you haven’t heard…contact THEM and explain your situation. You’ll get it in the mail with many/most college (eventually) anyway. If they have “rolling” admissions…you could e-mail them and ask that you’re notified by e-mail or snail mail (probably will be anyway), letting them know your phone isn’t “working very well”.

GOOD LUCK!

Colleges sometimes call just to “talk up” their school. If they can’t get ahold of you, no big deal.

You can ask your dad to keep the power on til 9pm if you’re that worried about it. Are you saying that he turns the electricity off of the entire home by 3pm?

Anyway, if you get a cheap old fashioned phone that only uses a phone jack, the turning the electricity off will not affect it, it will still ring.

Also, if a school can’t get ahold of you for an important reason, they’ll email you and/or contact your school.
