do early decision colleges see your first quarter grades? or does it end at the end of JR year

many college do request first quarter (marking period) grades from ED students (especially if they are on the fence about accepting them).

but they dont request info that often...do they?

At my son's school they request 1st quarter grades from ED applicants. It's published in a list with all the other things they require. They will of course make exceptions for students in schools that don't have a 1st quarter marking period.

I don't know about other colleges though.

^ which school is that? The main school im conerned with is Penn

Do you have something to be afraid of? Remember that all acceptances are conditional.

At my high school the first marking period grades are sent with the counselor evaluation for ED students.

well i did really well junior year, and right now i have alot of pressure the bar is set, and if i score anything less than perfect i will appear to have "dropped" grade wise. i think it would bve in my best interest to end my transcript junior year on a high note rather than let colleges see a slight dip...

Unless you have an application that says you walk on water and you create the water that you walk on, you will most likely have to submit your 1st quarter grades (or the college will ask for them).

Your best bet would be to talk to your guidance counselor to see how ED is handled at your school

It's not Penn. If your 1st quarter grades are a little iffy and it's too late to do anything about that (but it seems too early for that to be true), then don't send them if they don't ask. But make sure you get them up by the semester grades or you could be in a bit of trouble, depending on how much they slide.

If they do ask, and it's just one grade in a very difficult class or there is some other valid explanation, just send them a note when the 1st quarter grades are sent. I think they appreciate being communicated with.

My son had his very first B in his 1st quarter grades after submitting his ED application. It probably would not have been an app killer for him (at Amherst), but he was very unhappy about it. What happened was a combination of it being a very hard class with an incredibly hard-assed teacher. (The kind of guy who looks at his new class of senior high-achievers and says "I'm going to give you all your first B" ... and then laughs about it. He was a sub temporarily coming out of retirement, and was dispatched at the semester break by the administration of the school.)

Anyway, the other element was that S had to miss a quiz for an athletic committment. He was entitled to make up the test, but the quarter grades came due on a Friday, and his make-up appointment was following Monday. The teacher gave him an F for missing the quiz, and even though it was a provisional F, it landed on his 1st quarter grades bringing him down to a B overall. So S sent a note to admissions about that B, and also referred them to a counselor at the school that would vouch for this and update them on the current standing of his grade in the class.

Sooooooo... it was all okay. But communication is a good thing. If you're having issues, first bend over backwards to address them before first-quarter grades to whatever extent you're able. Beyond that, if there's good reason for the difficulties, do explain it. Admissions officers are people too.

But maybe they won't ask and you'll get the grades sorted out by the semester end. Good luck!

Sorry to abduct a thread but my school's first semester grades come out in January and I know ED decisons go out in December. So would they ask for it in my case?

My daughter's school sent in "interim grades," even though semester grades didn't come out until Jan.

It's not the first semester grades the OP was wondering about, it's first quarter grades. Some colleges will refer to these as "first marking period" grades. There are certainly high schools that don't have quarter (mid-semester grades), but many do.

Your January semester grades will have to be sent in with your Mid-Year Report, but that will be after you get an ED decision. If you are rejected, of course, you don't need to send them, but if you are accepted or deferred you'll have to submit them.

^^^ Oh! That makes alot more sense. Thanks! :)

Many top tier schools still want interim grades even if semester grades do not come out until Jan.

Do not be too certain about getting into ED no matter what people tell you. Do not slack off even during your spring semester, you may be waitlisted and your spring interim grades would matter.

I remember reading somewhere that the 1st quarter grades are not considered in terms of admissions...maybe it was semester? idk whatever just try your best and see where the wind blows you. =]

All school are going to request your second semester grades, too. Just a warning!
