First quarter grades

How often do colleges request first quarter grades from ED applicants? Which schools always do this/ which schools do not?
Thanks for all input!

I don't know the answer to that but my D who is a current applicant has a EA app in and they DO require first quarter grades by Nov. 1 though our grades here are being done this week so hers will be sent when ready. I don't think my other D when she did EA had to send in first quarter grades though.

If you are applying ED, the colleges will want to see your first quarter grades because they are your most recent.

Instead of focusing on who does not want to see your first quarter grades, focus on making sure those grades represent the best you. If the don't then maybe you should consider RD.

My reason for asking this question is not to "choose" a college.

My son has already applied ED to a school. I'm just trying to understand how likely it is that this school will ask for the grades. I've heard some colleges ask, and others don't bother.

In addition, all schools require the midyear grades and the year-end grades, so they will see the first quarter grades anyway, and can rescind their offers. People think this never happens, but it does. So I agree with Sybbie - do your best!

Further wrinkle - my son's school does not publish quarter grades - they only send year end grades (and first semester grades for seniors). So other than the ED school, no college would see the 1Q grades. (The first quarter is now done - too late for the do your best part.)

jrpar- are you saying you won't know what the grades are for 1Q, though they've been sent to the ED college?

In response to your previous question, all of the schools my son has considered has stated that they require 1Q grades. But, son's HS says they don't send them. I'm not sure how this works or what happens when they aren't sent....but they emphatically said they don't do it.

All my kids' colleges request the midyear report of first semester grades which for us show ONE grade per course, the true midyear average, not any particular quarter.

First D's early action school did not ask for first quarter, I dont' think, and that was Yale. NO other school ever asked for first quarter for RD.

Second D has an early app into Emerson (not single choice, but her only school that offers this option) and they DO require first quarter grades (says on the app) for their early applicants ONLY. The rest of her schools will use midyear reports.

As far as reports sent to colleges in June of senior year, our school's transcript, ONLY shows end of year final grade, no quarters, semesters, or exam grades, just one letter per course. So, no schools ever saw first quarter grades themselves but second D's EA school will.

Momsdream, we know the grades, and they will not be sent to the ED college UNLESS asked for. The ED school does not state in its materials that they require the 1Q grades, but I understand that some schools call and ask for 1Q grades anyways...

I don't know that I agree that all schools will see first quarter grades. All schools will see the transcript which will have all semester grades (including senior year) but most high schools don't post quarter grades to the official transcript. the only colleges that will see first quarter grades are those that specifically ask for it (which is very few). Obviously, work hard for better first quarter grades but I think it is the exception rather than the rule that schools will see them.

All that I have seen is a Mid-Year report that the schools request be submitted by Feb 1. This would have the first two quarters grades on it. My D turned these in to the GC when she turned in the GC rec form.

I really believe that the school is going to want to see some indication of how the student is doing senior year. The mid year report can take many forms. Schools which change courses each semester (example english 7 in the fall , English 8 inthe spring) the mid year report for that semester, may be the same as the quarter report for other schools (daughter went to a school that kids kep the same schedule all year).

I would ask the GC how this is handled regarding ED sudents as I would find it suprising that the every school does not have some sort of preliminary grades for seniors especially for students applying ED. If the school feels on the fence as far as looking at your son's record as of the end of junior year, it would surely get him deferred where as the senior year grades especially is he is staying strong, may put him over the top.

Remember the ton of information the college has about the ED candidate: 6 semester grades, 2 SAT1s, 3 SAT2s, maybe the ACT, # of AP scores, writing samples, resume, recommendations, essays...the list goes on. Yes, they will call the GC but most candidates are on one side of the fence long before considering quarter grades. Like one admission officer said about test scores, they use them like a drunk uses a light pole - for support not illumination.

For most selective schools the common set data (which can be found at the office of instritutional research at that particular school) states the following:

Relative importance of each of the following academic and nonacademic factors in your first-time, first-year, degree-seeking (freshman) admission decisions.

Very Important- Academic (in the order they list them)

School Record
Class Rank
Recommendations
Test scores

Grades are used as the most important predictor of future behavior being relevant past behavior. As Verone stated earlier, eventually the grades will be seen.
