Do freshman interested in majoring in accounting need to do anything "extra" after acceptance to UF?

Is there a separate application to the school of accounting? I assume that would come later, maybe after sophomore year? Also, if anyone reading this is (or was recently) an accounting major at UF, can you tell me what it is like? I’ve heard that it is “unnecessarily difficult”. (not sure exactly what that means, though!) I’d appreciate any input!
Thank you!

As a freshman, he can join, or at any point while he’s a freshman or sophomore. All he has to do is met the tracking requirements.

To stay in the program, you have to complete the minimum tracking requirements, which includes keeping a 3.0 GPA. See page 6 of the following document.

It’s a rigorous program (one reason it’s good/respected), and students that can’t keep the GPA or get the “B” in ACG 2021, have a tendency to drop out and go with a BS in Business admin or switch colleges (to Journalism, CLAS, etc.).

Thanks for the info, @Gator88NE! My son is one of those students that takes school almost too seriously, so he has a good chance of succeeding in a rigorous program. I want him to be able to enjoy his college experience, though, so hopefully he’ll have time for some fun stuff, too.

I’m about to complete my freshman year at UF. I didn’t switch my major to accounting until October of my freshman year. I dual enrolled financial accounting in high school at a community college and then took managerial accounting at UF. It is definitely much easier to get an A in the accounting class at the community college than at UF. However, the Fisher School of Accounting at UF definitely provides a lot of job and internship opportunities before you graduate.

Thank you for your response, @ipodsinger! I appreciate the information. My son has not taken any sort of accounting classes yet, so I’m curious what his first semester will be like. He will most likely come in with several credits from AP tests, so that further complicates things, I guess! I’m glad you mentioned internships–that is one thing we were concerned about. We were thinking that UCF might be in a better location to provide internship opportunities, so it is good to hear that UF will have opportunities as well. Thanks again for posting!
