When transferring to a university will honors classes be a big deal. Would a university prefer a student with a GPA of 3.5 honors or 3.9 standard courses.

It depends. Many community colleges have some sort of transfer agreement set up with other universities, either guaranteeing transfer for qualifying students or giving them a definite leg-up over the competition. IN many cases, honors classes are a condition of these programs (along with a minimum GPA and meeting subject and breadth requirements). Take one or two to see how well you cope with them.
